Looking back to Henry Ford and ahead to lean startups | PandoDaily

Henry Ford With 1921 Model T

Whether you are a government entity attempting to grow a startup ecosystem, a university trying to commercialize technology, a big business intent on reinvigorating (or saving) your business, or an entrepreneur seeking to change the world, you?re likely using old-school, 20th-century ?innovation? methods in a new, unrecognizable, global economy. In other words, you employ investors, consultants, professors, C-level executives, enterprise board members, and other luminaries who have an impressive track record of crushing it.

Good luck with that.

The last century economy was born out of the industrial revolution, which was enabled in no small degree by the concept of ?specialization of trade.? Companies were organized around what is known as ?batch-mode production,? dividing production into discrete stages or cells. You probably read about this in Adam Smith?s ?The Wealth of Nations,? in his example of the pin factory, when he showed how specialization boosts human productivity.

If you did, you learned that it is far more efficient and profitable than assembling an entire product one unit at a time.?But it took Henry Ford ? and the introduction of the factory assembly line ? to take the concept to a higher plain. Here?s how he explained it in his autobiography, ?My Life and Work?:

With one workman doing a complete job he could turn out from thirty-five to forty pieces in a nine-hour day, or about twenty minutes to an assembly. What he did alone was then spread into twenty-nine operations; that cut down the assembly time to thirteen minutes, ten seconds.

Ford applied the same philosophy to the entire automobile assembly as well as parts manufacturing. He did it for efficiency?s sake, to trim waste, speed up production time and manufacture cars at lower cost while maintaining quality. He recognized that his advantage over the competition was in continuously improving the manufacturing process, not continuously improving the car itself. Ford?s assembly line, while not ?The Toyota Way,? represents the same ?flow? ethos as and clearly is the predecessor to ?lean manufacturing.?

Critical to this story is that Ford was determined to build one model, the Model T. It took eight models and five years to achieve Ford?s ?universal? car.? Defying all industrial best practices, Ford announced in 1909: ?In the future we were going to build only one model, that the model was going to be ?Model T,? and that the chassis would be exactly the same for all cars, and I remarked: ?Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.??

While this process is not going away, it is decidedly last century.?The world of one car, one model, one color is long gone. Products tend toward increased complexity and a wider range of options and customized designs.? Ford?s car had 5,000 parts, including nuts and bolts. The main manufacturing facility had 500 departments. Today?s cars have more than 30,000 separate components. Car companies have multiple product lines, each having numerous models and each model offering different options.

Fast growth in new markets can hide many business model problems. As Ford the company grew by leaps and bounds, speed of execution was the primary issue to overcome and Henry Ford?s relentless focus on improving his assembly provided that. But in a more mature market with lots of competition, changing consumer expectations, and economic ups and downs, batch mode processing became wasteful.

All those departments very efficiently built up inventory whether needed or not. Materials, labor, space, and energy go into creating parts for which there is no immediate demand, with the assumption of future demand. Office organization followed suit. Where the production of one product requires a simple collection of marketing, selling, fulfillment, order processing and such, multiple lines times multiple models requires a lot of each function. The modern day corporate silos grew out of the natural inclination of grouping like functions in order to maximize resource utilization. Better to have a marketing copy department where resource employment and allocation can be managed based on number of products.

Naturally, someone needs to manage all these departments and manage the managers.? The result is often an innovation-stifling hierarchy. Ford recognized this, too:

If a straw boss wants to say something to the general superintendent, his message has to go through the sub-foreman, the foreman, the department head, and all the assistant superintendents, before, in the course of time, it reaches the general superintendent. Probably by that time what he wanted to talk about is already history.

Departments are measured on output efficiency. When demand is high, output efficiency is a pretty good barometer for company success. But measuring departments output efficiency across a number of products with fluctuating demand is a poor measure of business success. Departmental output, whether that be marketing brochures or flywheels only is indicative of success if cars are flying off the lots. In other words, are they keeping up with demand?

Such organizations are optimized for sustaining innovation.?In others, they create new, improved products for existing markets.?Managers and executives are adept at forecasting demand for raw materials, output, expenditures and revenues, because the future in these markets is predictable, as long as next year is similar to this year. They can?t create disruptive innovation ?? ie come up with anything completely new ? because such markets are unknown, not measurable and not predictable.

Arguing for the flow of the assembly line, Ford demonstrated that more products could be produced at better quality level and reduced cost than the craftsman methods that preceded him.

Lean manufacturing changed that with the concept of ?pull,? which dictates that a department only produces output when the downstream process demands it, all the way through to the customer order. In many cases, pull plus flow improves products, increases efficiency and reduces cost, by aligning activities with demand.

Fast-forward to emerging digital fabrication technology and you have a manufacturing process combines the uniqueness and customizable nature of the craftsman with the speed and efficiency of lean manufacturing. What does the auto industry look like with crowdsourced car designs, 3D printers that print physical goods exactly when the product is demanded, and open source, interchangeable auto parts?

Organizational structures must adapt. Businesses that can only muster sustaining innovation are in a race to the bottom, their products destined for the commodity bin.

Economies that prop up old-school practices will not succeed long term. Supporting startups is the right way to create job growth, but if we treat startups like small versions of big companies, they are doomed as well.

Top-down, hierarchical thinking that describes big business management practices is not suitable for a startup?s ecosystem: The highest-paid person doesn?t predict the future any better than anyone else.?The one with the money doesn?t know best.?Venture capitalists can?t pick winners out of a crowd. Startup founders are not visionaries.

Businesses must become fast and agile with decentralized control, able to make decisions on value creation on the fly. They must be close to customers, not in order to do what they say, but to understand them deeply. They must be experimental, continuously improving the processes of product creation. They must measure business functions in a way that reflects actual company performance and provides information that can be acted upon.

Above all, they should look back at Henry Ford so they can see the road ahead.

'I did it!'? Obama takes oath surrounded by family at White House

Larry Downing / Reuters

President Barack Obama gets a hug from his daughter Malia as wife Michelle and daughter Sasha looks on in the Blue Room of the White House in Washington, Jan. 20, 2013.

By Carrie Dann, Political Reporter, NBC News

President Barack Obama was officially sworn in Sunday for his second term as president of the United States, ahead of Monday's public events.

In a small and succinct ceremony at the White House, Obama recited the constitutionally mandated oath of office for the third of four expected times during his time in office. ?

Embracing his children after the oath, his younger daughter Sasha was heard to whisper ?good job, Daddy!??

"I did it!" he responded, before she observed "You didn't mess up."?

Sunday's official swearing-in, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts, was the 57th inauguration of a president in American history.?

This time, President Obama and Justice Roberts got the words right. The oath took 32 seconds inside the White House. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Wearing a dark suit and blue tie, Obama repeated the directive to ?preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." He was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama and his daughters Sasha and Malia. ?

After thanking Roberts and waving to cameras, Obama and the first family left the White House's Blue Room. He will deliver his public inaugural address Monday on the west front of the United States Capitol.

During the brief swearing-in Sunday, the first lady -- who wore a dark blue dress -- held the family Bible upon which Obama laid his hand to swear the oath. According to inaugural officials, the Bible was a gift from Mrs. Obama?s father to his mother in 1958.

When Obama first took the oath of office on?Jan. 20?four years ago, he and Chief Justice John Roberts tripped up over the wording, raising concerns about whether the constitutional requirements were fulfilled to the letter of the law.? Roberts went to the White House the next day and administered it again in full.?

The short Sunday?ceremony was held because the constitutionally mandated inauguration date of Jan. 20 falls on a Sunday, so Obama will take the oath a fourth and final time on Monday before hundreds of thousands of observers on the National Mall.?

America may be politically divided, but most Americans report really liking Michelle Obama, who counts helping military families among her key initiatives. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

The Monday ceremonies will include?the president's inaugural address, a?luncheon with the president and members? of Congress and the traditional inaugural parade and?balls.?

Ahead of the ceremony, the Obama family attended church at the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington , a historic place of worship that also hosted pre-inaugural services for former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Albert Gore.

Vice President Joe Biden was officially sworn in?at about 8:20 a.m. ET Sunday.

The small?weekend ceremonies for both men are a bit of a historical quirk, although today's swearing-in was the seventh in history to take place on a Sunday.? The last instance occurred in 1985, when President Ronald Reagan was formally sworn in for his second term in office.

Beginning with the second inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937, new presidents and vice presidents have been sworn in on Jan. 20 due to the changes laid out in the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

(Before that, inaugurations were typically held on March 4, as directed by the 12th Amendment. But controversy over the length of the lame duck period forced that ceremony to be moved up by law).

In addition, eight vice presidents have been administered the oath of office upon the death of a president. The hastily planned ceremonies have taken place in hotels, homes and -- famously, after the death of John F. Kennedy -- aboard Air Force One.?

The oath of office for the president is set out in the Constitution.

Article II, Section 1, states as follows "Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation: -- "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Traditionally, two minor changes are made. First, the president taking the oath says his name after the first word ("I, Barack Hussein Obama"). And second, the phrase "so help me God" is added at the end.?

NBC's Pete Williams and Shawna Thomas contributed to this report.?

The Age of Small Business | World of Psychology

The Age of Small BusinessEvery single entrepreneur on the face of this earth is actually writing a book. And the nature of that book must begin right now. Where you are. With the question: what do I wish to say?
~ Michael E. Gerber

The United States was founded on a system of free enterprise in order to cultivate freedom and opportunity. A free enterprise economy matters since it enables individuals to achieve success, to ?plant their own seed,? and to leave a mark on others? lives. This foundation is based upon the voluntary exchange of goods and services, where both parties benefit from this transaction.

With our recent economic woes, unemployment is still a relevant issue. This has taken an emotional toll on fathers and mothers who struggle to put food on the table. College graduates, who?ve spent several years working diligently toward a degree, are having trouble finding positions in their desired fields. Then there are those who have stopped looking for work altogether.

Maybe this is the time that lends itself to a ?call to action,? where individuals can take a leap of faith and personally invest in their pursuit of happiness. Aspiring entrepreneurs, inventors and dreamers, of all kinds, must take initiative.

In a blog post in Psychology Today, Marilyn Price-Mitchell, Ph.D, discusses how teens learn: ?We now know that learning to overcome challenges during adolescence develops initiative, an important characteristic of how we successfully pursue goals,? she says.

While trying not to confuse initiative with achievement, Price-Mitchell advocates that initiative is one?s inner ability to move forth with purpose. As adolescents grow into young adults, they realize the power of choice. By choosing to participate in activities that illustrate creativity, dignity and autonomy, they will feel internally rewarded. Price-Mitchell is a firm believer in encouraging teens to challenge themselves and seize the potential to think critically, while also learning to get along effectively with peers and adults.

?They may be judged by others and given feedback that prompts an adjustment to strategies or behavior,? she notes. ?These are important, valuable experiences that help adolescents learn to propel themselves forward.?

What drives initiative? Particular attributes are needed in order to exert control, and to go the extra mile in developing a business of one?s own. (Forbes contributor Eric T. Wagner lists seven in particular in his article 7 Traits of Incredibly Successful Entrepreneurs.)

Wagner stresses the significance of persevering and staying focused on your journey, even when the finish line appears a bit out of reach and overwhelming. ?Are things going to look impossible for you as an entrepreneur? You better believe it,? he writes. ?Will you feel like giving up and throwing in the towel? Absolutely. But do you need to fight off the urge to quit and keep pressing on? Yes!?

Small business guru Michael E. Gerber draws parallels with starting your own company to writing your own book in his article, Traits of a Truly Entrepreneurial Mindset. Just as the process of writing asks you to think of the kind of wisdom you wish to impart to the reader, starting a company requires similar questions to be asked.

?Your business is a product of how you, its creator, think about it: what it sells, what it does, how it does it, who your people are, and how you help them grow,? Gerber said.

?The year is young. Possibilities are everywhere.
Do you have any interesting business ideas?

Billionaire heiress: I'm 'rich and boyfriendless'

15 hrs.

Being an heiress is harder than you'd think.

There's the pressure of living up to your parents, the spotlight of the media and, of course, the daily dilemma over which diamond-dog collar to put on your pocket pooch.

But China's richest heiress has expounded on another problem: boyfriends. Or the lack thereof.

Zong Fuli, 30,? the daughter of beverage magnate Zong Qinghou (net worth around $12 billion), tells the Chinese edition of Marie Claire that she is "rich and boyfriendless." She says she can't find a regular nice guy, and that men simply want her for her money.

"I feel pessimistic about love. Quite often it is hard for girls like me to find a boyfriend. Everyone knows this," said Miss Zong, who went to Pepperdine University in California and works at her dad's drinks empire.

"I have simple requests in love. He could be someone who sends me text messages every day with simple greetings such as asking whether I've eaten yet, or when I am going to bed. Just a little love and caring would be enough for me. But it is very hard to find a man like this, really."

She said that most men "just want to do business."

Needless to say, throngs of single Chinese men have offered themselves to Zong on the internet. (Before you ask, no I don't have her email address or number.) "I will be your Prince Charming," wrote one suitor.

Shentan Chenxing, a blogger, said "gold and property will always be more reliable than men." Others suggested a simple pre-nup would solve her dilemma.

Another had a more drastic solution: "Fake a new identity and get a low-key job. Then you will find true love."
