Pending home sales rise to 1.5 year high (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Pending sales of existing homes surged to a 1-1/2 year high in November, an industry group said on Thursday, offering more signs of a tentative recovery in the housing market.

The National Association of Realtors' Pending Home Sales Index, based on contracts signed in November, increased 7.3 percent to 100.1 -- the highest level since April 2010.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected pending sales to rise only 2 percent. Pending sales lead existing home sales by a month or two.

Recent data on home sales and construction have been fairly upbeat, suggesting an improvement in the sector, but prices continue to trend lower.

Verizon fixes yet another data outage

By Rosa Golijan

Verizon Wireless

Updated at 6 p.m. PT

On Wednesday, Verizon Wireless customers had to deal with yet another data outage. Like previous technical glitches, the outage was resolved within a day's time and Verizon tweeted an obligatory line about things being back to normal.

At the time of the outage, Verizon's own support forums were filled with complaints from customers who had trouble with both 3G and 4G data service.

When asked about the issue though, a Verizon spokesperson said that the company was "investigating reports of some customers experiencing trouble accessing the 4G LTE network" and that "the network itself continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services." The spokesperson said that "3G devices are operating normally."

This statement gave us a case of d?j? vu.?On Dec. 21, Verizon customers faced a similar outage and the company's response was nearly identical:?4G issues were resolved, but 3G connectivity was said to have never affected. Prior to that, another outage occurred on Dec. 6.

Twitter

We're not certain why Verizon denied any 3G-related network difficulties vehemently and repeatedly?? despite a steady stream of customer reports of the contrary?? but we have reached out to the company for comment. We will update once we receive a response.

In the meantime, we're simply glad that the complaints about both 3G and 4G difficulties do seem to have quieted down. Hopefully the third fix will have been the charm for Verizon.

Update: Late Thursday, Verizon issued a lengthy statement about the 4G service outage, although it gave no explanation for the cause. Each of the three outages this month have "been different from a technical standpoint," the company said. "Our engineers have successfully diagnosed those past triggering events, and they have not re-occurred."

The "recent issues that affected our customers? 4G ... service were unforeseen despite careful, diligent planning, deployment and ongoing upgrade programs."

As to customer complaints that 3G service was also affected, Verizon said, "Our 3G and 1X networks continue to reliably process calls, texts and data for customers with 3G devices ... It continues to perform at the high level that established it as the nation?s largest and most reliable 3G network."

The company did say that "for brief periods, such as on Wednesday ... 4GLTE customers could not connect to the 3G Network as quickly as we would have liked."

Verizon says it is taking "a number of steps, working closely with our network suppliers, to ensure the integrity of our 4GLTE Network. We continue to fortify and improve its performance, and our goal is that our 4GLTE Network meets the same high standards that our 3G Network has set for performance and reliability.

"Among the numerous measures we have taken or will take are: geographic segmentation, which enables us to isolate, contain and rectify network performance issues, and maintain service to the majority of customers when an issue does develop; and software fixes that we have developed, tested and applied regularly?? and will continue to do so. Both will improve performance and reliability."

Online shopping up 16.4 percent on Christmas

A growing number of shoppers apparently need only the briefest of breaks before diving back in, especially if they can log in to shop.

IBM found that online shopping jumped 16.4 percent on Christmas Day over last year, and the dollar amount of those purchases that were made using mobile devices leaped 172.9 percent.

IBM tracks shopping at more than 500 websites other than Amazon.com, which is the largest. It found a huge increase in the number of shoppers making their purchases with iPhones, iPads and Android-powered mobile devices.

In fact, nearly 7 percent of all online purchases were made using iPads, just 18 months after the tablet computers were released by Apple Inc., said John Squire, chief strategy officer for IBM's Smarter Commerce unit.

The online uptick was continuing on Monday. As of 3 p.m. Eastern time, shopping was up 10 percent over Dec. 26, 2010. And the expectation was that the pace of buying would increase as the day wore on and consumers clicked on sales at various retailers.

Squire said consumers were chasing sales on both Sunday and Monday. The data did not show what portion of purchases was made using gift cards.

L.A.Kwanzaa parade kicks off holiday

A parade on Crenshaw Boulevard today will mark the start of the seven-day African-American festival of Kwanzaa.

The theme of the 35th annual Kwanzaa Gwaride Parade and Festival will be "A New Paradigm," according to R.W. Akile for People of Color, which organizes the parade and festival.

Linda Jay, a community activist and author of the book "I Was There," will be the Iyaba (queen) of the parade and filmmaker Walter Powell will be the Oba (king).

The parade is set to begin at noon at the corner of Crenshaw and Adams boulevards, then head south along Crenshaw to Leimert Park, where it will conclude. A festival will follow in Leimert Park.

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, now chair of Cal State Long Beach's Department of Africana Studies, in what he called "an audacious act of self-determination."

Kwanzaa's focus is the "Nguzo Saba," the Seven Principles - unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

"The seven principles of Kwanzaa are values that we as Angelenos all hold dear," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said.

During the week, a candelabrum called a Kinara is lit, and ears of corn representing each child in the family are placed on a traditional straw mat.

African foods such as millet, spiced pepper balls and rice are often served. Some people fast during the holiday, and a feast is often held on its final night.

A three-barred flag - red for for freedom, black for unity and green for the future - is often displayed at this time.

Kwanzaa is based on the theory of Kawaida, which espouses that social revolutionary change for black America can be achieved by exposing blacks to their cultural heritage.

"The celebration of the 45th anniversary of Kwanzaa is a significant marker and milestone in itself," Karenga wrote in his annual founder's message.

FAYETTEVILLE ? Some tornado victims are still cleaning up and working hard to get ready for the holidays after the April storms which delivered significant damage to homes and businesses in the Fayetteville area.

Some houses are finished, others still show the damage from the day the tornado hit. For the first few months after the storm, many crews were in the area clearing tree limbs.

Now the debris is gone, but so are some residents who were not able to rebuild.

"The house next to me, it was knocked off the back foundation. It was condemned. A buyer came in and bought it just for fixing up," said Fayetteville resident Robert Staples.

Fayetteville resident James Moran was a bit luckier. Moran said he only suffered some roof damage, broken windows and loss of siding. Now Moran is looking ahead to celebrating the holidays.

"We got all the decorations up. Got family up from Florida, its coming along well. All the repairs are done," said Moran.

The residents that are still there, can't help but think about their neighbors who weren't as lucky.

"Our community is still in shock from that April 16 day. It's not something that you forget. Even high winds and a cloudy day can kind of hit your nerve the wrong way," said Staples.

(AP) ? Fights, vandalism and arrests marked the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes as a shopping rush on stores across the United States led to unrest that nearly turned into rioting.

The outbursts of chaos stretched from Washington state to Georgia as shoppers ? often waiting for hours in lines ? converged on stores Friday in pursuit of the shoes, a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour.

Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. Shoppers also broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

The mayhem was reminiscent of the violence that broke out 20 years ago in many cities as the shoes, endorsed by former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan, became popular targets for thieves. It also had a decidedly Black Friday feel as huge crowds of shoppers overwhelmed stores for a must-have item.

In some areas, lines began forming several hours before businesses opened for the $180 shoes that were selling in a limited release.

As the crowds kept growing through the night, they became more unruly and ended in vandalism, violence and arrests.

A man was stabbed when a brawl broke out between several people waiting in line at a Jersey City, New Jersey mall to buy the new shoes, authorities said. The 20-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries.

In Richmond, California, police say crowds waiting to buy the Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords at the Hilltop Mall were turned away after a gunshot rang out around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but police said a 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody. The gun apparently went off inadvertently, the Contra Costa Times reported.

Seventeen-year-old Dylan Pulver in Great Neck, New York, said he's been looking forward to the release of the shoes for several years, and he set out at 4:30 a.m. to get a pair. After the first store he tried was too crowded, he moved on to a second location and scored a pair.

"I probably could have used a half a size smaller, but I was just really happy to have the shoe," he said.

The frenzy over Air Jordans has been dangerous in the past. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the shoe, created by Nike Inc. in 1984.

The Air Jordan has since been a consistent hit with sneaker fans, spawning a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. Some collectors save the shoes for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

A new edition was launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

But the uproar over the shoe had died down in recent years. These latest incidents seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Wal-Mart in Los Angeles on Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike issued a statement in response to the violence that said: "Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

The retro version of the Air Jordan 11 was a highly sought-after shoe because of the design and the fact that the original was released in 1996 when Jordan and the Bulls were at the height of their dominance.

Pulver said they were a "defining shoe in Jordan's career."

Other disturbances reported at stores in places like Kentucky and Nebraska ranged from shoving and threats to property damage.

In Taylor, Michigan, about 100 people forced their way into a shopping center around 5:30 a.m., damaging decorations and overturning benches. Police say a 21-year-old man was arrested.

In Toledo, Ohio, police said they arrested three people after a crowd surged into a mall.

In Lithonia, Georgia, at least four people were apparently arrested after customers broke down a door at a store selling the shoes. DeKalb County police said up to 20 squad cars responded.

In Northern California, two men were arrested at a Fairfield mall after crowds shoved each other to get in position for the Nikes, police said.

In Stockton, Detective Joe Silva said a person was taken into custody at Weberstown Mall on suspicion of making criminal threats involving the shoes. Police also were investigating an attempted robbery in the mall's parking lot. The victim was wrongly believed to have just purchased Air Jordans.

In Tukwila, Officer Murphy said the crowd was on the verge of a riot and would have gotten even more out of hand if the police hadn't intervened.

About 25 officers from Tukwila and surrounding areas responded. Murphy said police smelled marijuana and found alcohol containers at the scene.

"It was not a nice, orderly group of shoppers," Murphy said. "There were a lot of hostile and disorderly people."

The Southcenter mall's stores sold out of the Air Jordans, and all but about 50 people got a pair, Murphy said.

Shoppers described the scene as chaotic and at times dangerous.

Carlisa Williams said she joined the crowd at the Southcenter for the experience and ended up buying two pairs of shoes, one for her and one for her brother. But she said she'll never do anything like it again.

"I don't understand why they're so important to people," Williams told KING-TV. "They're just shoes at the end of the day. It's not worth risking your life over."

Alan Wake's American Nightmare was born out of the Fight Till Dawn arcade mode (Digital Trends)

alan-wakes-american-nightmare-7

Remedy?s Xbox 360 exclusive Alan Wake was a breath of fresh air for video games when it finally arrived in 2010 after an extended development period. Here was a game that seemed to be putting story ahead of everything else. It was fun to play, with combat built around mechanics involving light and shadow, but the narrative was the real hook, with its serial TV drama-style presentation and episodic arrangement.

Remedy?s recently confirmed early 2012 Xbox Live Arcade release Alan Wake?s American Nightmare ALSO has a story, but it?s one that is best viewed as a spin-off. In fact, the plan for a game technically existed before a story was even in the picture, as I learned during a recent sitdown in New York City with Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne and head of franchise development Oskari H?kkinen.

?Alan Wake was a tip of the hat to Alfred Hitchcock, to Stephen King, to Lost, and this has a different feel and a different focus,? H?kkinen told me. ?Some of the influences are pointing more toward Quentin Tarantino, with a Dusk ?Til Dawn-ish grindhouse feel to it. More pulp fiction.?

?So how this came about? after Alan Wake, we were looking at what people liked and it seemed kind of universally agreed that everyone liked the story, the characters, the cinematics and the thriller-esque feeling it. But one thing that a lot of people were saying was that they would?ve liked to have seen a further escalation in the combat, perhaps some different types of weapons and enemies as well. More variation as the story progressed.?

The team used that feedback to create a sort of ???white room sandbox,??

?We put lots of wild stuff in there,? H?kkinen said. ?It just seemed like the perfect fit for Xbox Live Arcade. That?s how it started off.?

From there the idea was pitched over to Remedy creative director Sam Lake, who saw a good opportunity to tell another Wake story. He also acknowledged that the more outrageous sampling of weapons and enemies cooked up for what we now know as Alan Wake?s American Nightmare wouldn?t necessarily fit within the narrative framework established in the 2010 game. That?s where the next piece of the puzzle fell into place, with Night Springs.

The story in American Nightmare puts players in control of Wake as he lives through an episode of the TV series Night Springs, a Twilight Zone-like show in the Wake universe that players got glimpses of in the previous game. ?These kind of weapons and enemies fit in perfectly,? H?kkinen said. ?It?s a little bit lighter and it?s something anyone could jump on board with. But for the fans out there, there?s tons of optional story content as well that connects the dots to the first game and explains why we are here.?

Myllyrinne chimed in at this point. ?I think the other consideration we had was, we felt that the medium needs to be reflected in the content. So when you play an XBLA game? even though we?re challenging a lot of the conventions [with American Nightmare], people want to pick it up and play [an XBLA game] to have fun. I think having something like the [Fight Till Dawn survival] arcade mode makes perfect sense for that medium.?

?When we look at the story mode [in American Nightmare], it?s a more contracted experience compared to a full-on 12 to 15 hour adventure. We wanted to introduce these elements really rapidly and make sure that players can jump in and [just] enjoy them, get right down to the core of the ?fight with light? combat mechanics and also a story that has a meaningful structure to it.?

The big surprise for me in all of this was hearing that American Nightmare, a spinoff of one of the most successfully executed game narratives? well? ever, was actually born out of a relatively simple and straightforward arcade-style survival mode. What?s more, that survival mode itself exists only because of the dev team?s efforts to respond to critical and fan feedback. I mentioned this and got nods of agreement from the Remedy guys.

?We?ve done games before where we started more from a narrative perspective. This time, the broad narrative was done already because we?ve plotted out Wake?s journey, if you will,? Myllyrinne explaied. ?We started very much from a gaming perspective here. I wish I could say we had a grand design, but it was more iterative and just kind of came from the arcade mode.?

?It?s a fun time to try to do things slightly differently and in a more concise period of time and so we just cut loose and had fun and had more liberties than you would have than in, for example, a game like the original Wake, where you have a distinctive and different style that you want to achieve. Here we were able to put the gameplay first.?

?We were having such a blast with the early test levels ourselves and we kind of felt, WE like it, and we?d like to share it out with the world. So we took the ball and ran with it, rang up Microsoft and said, ?Oh, by the way, we have a surprise for you.? They were stoked when we showed it to them. They thought it was something kind of different from what they?ve seen before. We?ve been really excited about their support and they?re excited about the opportunity as well.?

H?kkinen chimed in here. ?We looked at what people really loved about Alan Wake and then had a look at what gamers perhaps really want. So this is really from gamers to gamers.?

alan-wakes-american-nightmare-1

Looking at the history, American Nightmare is really just the latest evolution for a development studio that has tended to push itself in different directions with each new project. Whether it?s Max Payne fusing third-person shooter action with bullet-time and a strong narrative focus or Wake with its ?fight with light? combat and unconventional yet highly effective approach to story pacing. Then there?s Death Rally, the combat-oriented iOS racer played from a top-down perspective that was released earlier this year.

?With Death Rally earlier this year we worked with a smaller developer to get something different out to the iPhone and iPad. We love those kinds of devices and ecosystems like the App Store and XBLA. It?s one of those things where we felt we could just be quicker to respond,? Myllyrinne explained.

?We do read our Facebook sites, we do read our community sites, and a lot of the e-mail and feedback. That?s part of the reason, for example, when Microsoft gave us the freedom to bring Wake to PC, which we?re doing early next year, we ran with it because we were getting a lot of requests for it. Maybe it?s changing in many ways. This used to be an industry where you needed to work really hard to sell your concept to a publisher who would then work really hard to sell it to retail who would then work really hard to sell it to the audience. Whereas now it?s more instantaneous, where you actually have the creative team who?s driving it in direct interaction with the audience.?

Bringing it back to Wake, H?kkinen reassured me that the particular change in direction we?re seeing with American Nightmare isn?t necessarily a signal to fans that the series as a whole is changing along with it. ?It?s an IP that?s very, very important to us. I think we do great things with Alan Wake. This spinoff experience is a little bit different, but there?s merit to it because it?s set in Night Springs,? he said.

H?kkinen then went on to admit that American Nightmare ?does connect some dots? within the larger story, ?so it?s not a complete spin-off.? The Night Springs package is really meant to challenge players with a wider set of enemies and a wider set of tools to attack those enemies with. The thing that Remedy wants fans to remember is that American Nightmare DOES slot into the bigger picture.

?You could argue that, within the fiction, Wake ? because his fiction can become real ? he?s perhaps writing himself out of the Dark Place or attempting to get to his wife,? Myllyrinne said. ?There is a?? He sighs at this point, cutting himself off. ?I don?t want to give away the story.?

H?kkinen came to the rescue here. ?There IS a back story to this. Early on in his career, [Wake] had written several episodes of Night Springs. And now you are playing an episode of Night Springs. And this episode happens to be written by Alan Wake himself.?

?How we spin the yarn and how it comes together is something that we planned ahead and do build on,? Myllyrinne explained. ?For example, Mr. Scratch was alluded to in the [original Alan Wake] DLC, and we alluded to the fact that Wake had written Night Springs a little bit. So we are building these different pieces, and hopefully when they all fall into place people will be able to see where it all came from.?

?Another connection to Bright Falls and what?s happened is Mr. Scratch is an urban legend that?s become real,? H?kkinen added. ?That comes out of Alan Wake going missing, he was in the Dark Place. When [he] went missing, the locals in Bright Falls started talking about this writer/rockstar who came to their town and murdered his wife in a cabin. So that?s where the urban legend was born that is now Mr. Scratch, which is darkness shaped in Alan Wake?s image.?

?We will continue with [the series], but where the future is at with it? if people really love this [arcade] stuff, perhaps it?s in the cards to do a little more with this as well, around Night Springs. But with Alan Wake as well, it?s something people really love and we?re storytellers after all, so it?ll be exciting to tell more of the story.?

In other words, don?t change that channel, folks. More Wake to come. For now, stay tuned for American Nightmare, coming to Xbox Live Arcade early next year.

Rhapsody President Jon Irwin vowed to shave his head if the Seattle digital music company reached a milestone: 1 million paying subscribers in the U.S.

And today, Irwin is sporting a chrome dome.

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows [Gift Guide 2011]

Give the Gift of Better Apps for WindowsSoftware isn't exactly the sexiest of all gifts, but it can actually be a great thing to give. There are a lot of apps out there that can make your friends' life easier or more enjoyable, that they might not pay for themself?and that's where you come in. Here are some of our favorite paid Windows apps that fit the bill.

Note: Giving a digital download isn't exactly the most dramatic gift, so we put together nice images for each app on this list that you can provide along with the download/serial number/whatever. Just right-click on any image to save a larger version.

Apps Under $30

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

Trillian Pro

Trillian is one of our favorite IM clients for Windows, and the pro version is where it really shines. Not only does it remove all those annoying ads, but all its cross-platform majesty really starts to click: you can view all your chat logs in the cloud, continue a conversation on one machine from another machine instantly, and more. Not to mention you get priority email support from the Trillian team if something ever goes wrong, which is great to have on hand. If you know an IM fiend who's all over a number of platforms?whether it's Windows, Mac, Android, or iPhone?Trillian Pro is an inexpensive but great piece of software to give.

Buy Trillian Pro ($12 per year)

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

Fences Pro

Think of your friends. Now think of their desktops. I bet you can think of at least one (probably ten) friends that have cluttered desktops with icons all over the place, making you cringe every time you see it. First, direct them to our feature on designing a clean, organized desktop, and then buy them Fences Pro. Fences is a great app that lets you organize your icons in little boxes on your desktop, but the inexpensive pro version kicks it up a notch by letting you choose a default fence for new icons, automatically organize and sort icons into fences by name, file type, and other factors, have your fences appear faded until moused over, and lots of customization features. If that won't keep them organized, nothing will.

Buy Fences Pro ($19.95)

Xplorer2

Windows explorer is fine, but when it comes to dealing with mountains of files, it's far from perfect. There are a ton of alternative file browsers on Windows, but Xplorer2 is our favorite. It's incredibly customizable, has a great interface, can replace Windows Explorer as your file manager, and do a ton more. The pro version makes this great program even better, by letting you assign specific view modes to certain folders, compare and synchronize two folders, advanced search through any type of file (even in ZIP folders), and search the content of files instead of just the file names. In short, it's the best darn file manager you'll find on Windows, and anyone that's tired of sifting through files in Explorer will be happy to use it. If it doesn't seem like the perfect gift to you, though, check out the alternatives, too.

Buy Xplorer2 ($29.95)

Apps Between $30 and $60

Breevy

If you haven't realized it by now, we're obsessed with text expansion. After all, it can save you hours of typing every day. Windows has a few good free options, but Breevy is the best of the bunch?except for its cost. That makes it the perfect gift: anyone who loves text expansion will love Breevy, but might not be willing to pay for it themselves. It's easily the most stable option on Windows (as text expansion can be pretty finicky), and it can do a heck of a lot more than just simple text expansion. It can launch applications, visit web sites, and even open files with simple text snippets. Plus, if they're a Mac user, they'll be able to sync their TextExpander snippets with Breevy, which is just icing on the cake.

Buy Breevy ($34.95)

MediaMonkey Gold

MediaMonkey is the perfect player for the music junkie in your life. If they aren't using it already, this gift will give them a nudge in the right direction?not to mention add some awesome advanced features to sweeten the deal. On its own, the free version of MediaMonkey is the ultimate music tagger and organizer, but the gold version adds the ability to split up music into different collections (which is useful when managing multiple libraries), automatically organize and rename files, create automatic Genius-like playlists, auto-convert files, and rip CDs like a professional. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. We all have that friend who hoards music like its their job?and this app is for them. You can grab a gold license for this version of MediaMonkey, or a lifetime license that will give them free upgrades to gold for every version to come.

Buy MediaMonkey Gold ($24.95 for this version, $49.95 for a lifetime license)

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum

Handbrake has long been our favorite DVD ripper and encoder, but it can't decode copy protection on Windows very easily?nor is it very beginner-friendly. If you have a friend that wants to watch movies on their computer, iPad, smartphone, or any other device, a premium DVD ripper like WinX's offering can be a nice gift. It turns the entire process into two simple steps: insert disc, press the rip button. It'll rip it to the format of their choosing, for the device of their choosing, and they can get on with watching their movie. Of course, it still has some advanced settings for those that want it, but it can be as simple as they want too. Right now, WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is on sale, and includes a license for their Blu-Ray ripper, for all the HD enthusiasts that you know. If WinX DVD Ripper isn't doing it for you, though, you can always go for something a bit more traditional, like DVDFab.

Buy WinX DVD Ripper Platinum (Currently on sale for $35.95)

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

DisplayFusion Pro

If you know anyone that uses multiple monitors, they need DisplayFusion. The pro version lets them add a taskbar to every monitor, customize their multi-monitor wallpapers, move windows and change wallpapers with a hotkey, save and load monitor profiles, snap window edges together, change the windows logon background, put different screensavers on each monitor, and much more. Frankly, it's a little shocking that a lot of these features aren't in Windows already, but for such a powerful program, it's easily worth the cash. It turns a computer with two monitors into a computer for two monitors, and it's an essential tool for anyone that needs that big digital workspace.

Buy DisplayFusion Pro ($$25 for one computer, $35 for multiple computers)

Apps for Gift-Givers with Money to Burn (Over $50)

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

Microsoft Office

We love free office suites around here, but the sad fact of life is that sometimes you just need Microsoft Office. If you know someone that's trying to suffer through Google Docs or LibreOffice in situations where they just won't do, give the gift of relief with a license for the real deal. It isn't cheap, but if you've got the money to blow?or, if you can snag them a student discounted copy (it's cheating, I know)?they'll be pretty thankful.

Buy Microsoft Office ($119.99 for one license, $149.99 for three licenses)

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

Windows 7

Whether your friend is running ol' Windows XP or Vista, or whether they're just dealing with the annoyances of an illegally downloaded copy, you can bring them into the future with a full, legal copy of Microsoft's latest and greatest operating system. Like Office, we all know how costly Windows can be, but once again, if you have access to a discounted version of Windows for students, it's an inexpensive gift that they'll really appreciate. While you're at it, it might be a good time to set their computer on the track to self-maintenance, so they don't need to keep asking you for help.

Buy Windows 7 ($119.99 for Home, $199.99 for Professional, $219.99 for Ultimate)

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

For the photography nut in your life, you might consider upgrading them to a better photo editor and manager. Picasa can only do so much, and while it isn't cheap, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a huge step up. It's perfect for editing and organizing large collections, handling many adjustments without the hassle that many professional programs might include. It's especially great for those just starting out with photography, as they'll be able to see what more advanced editing programs include.

Buy Adobe Photoshop Lightroom ($299)

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

Adobe Photoshop CS5

While Lightroom is great for most photographers, other photography buffs?or just plain design buffs?might need the cream of the crop. Whether they're editing photos, designing for the web, or even getting into digital painting, Photoshop will get the job done. While the $700 program is a pretty generous gift already, you might want to include a copy of our Photoshop night school course while you're at it, so they can learn the ins and outs without digging through all the menus themselves.

Buy Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 ($699.00 or $199.00 for Upgrades)

Give the Gift of Better Apps for Windows

Adobe Premiere

We all have that one video-obsessed friend, and whether they're directing their own low-budget movie or planning on conquering YouTube with their own video podcast, they'll need something good to edit with. Adobe
Premiere Pro CS5.5 is our favorite video editor on Windows, providing a super powerful, professional environment in which you can edit any type of video. It isn't cheap, but by tacking on our video editing night school, you'll at least feel like you're giving them an education along with the app.

Buy Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5

Fire destroyes Buddhist temple in Colorado

Lao Buddhist Temple of Colorado

Fire destroyed this Buddhist temple in Westminster, Colo.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- A major fire Monday morning in the Denver suburb of Westminster injured a monk and destroyed a Buddhist temple for Laotians.

The blaze at the Lao Buddhist Temple of Colorado was reported sometime before 5 a.m. by the senior monk inside the temple, said Sy Pong, the temple's secretary of English. "He woke up and saw fire burning inside the main temple," Pong told msnbc.com.

The monk, Ounkham Veunnasack, age 76 or 77, was the only person inside the structure at the time, Pong said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor burns and smoke inhalation.

"He's doing OK," Pong said.

The temple, which was recently remodeled, was "a total loss," Pong said.

About five monks are typically assigned to the temple, Pong told The Denver Post.

Westminster Fire Department spokeswoman Diana Allen said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Firefighters reported problems getting water as temperatures hovered near zero.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Iranian diplomats leave UK after expulsion (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran prepared a high-profile welcome for its diplomats expelled Friday from London in retaliation for attacks on British compounds in Tehran that Western leaders claim were sanctioned by Tehran's ruling elite.

The official reception planned for the roughly two dozen diplomats and their families ? including a rare invitation to foreign media to cover the airport event ? apparently was designed to send a message that Iran will not seek quick measures to heal the most serious diplomatic fallout with the West since the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy after the Islamic Revolution.

Germany, France and the Netherlands have recalled their ambassadors, and Italy and Spain summoned Iranian envoys to condemn Tuesday's storming of the British Embassy and residential complex.

Britain withdrew its diplomatic staff and their families, shuttered its ransacked embassy and ordered the Iranian diplomats expelled by Friday afternoon.

The larger blow may be to Iran's relations with the West and others. The diplomatic freeze from Europe, including key trading partner Germany, further isolates Iran just weeks after a report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency that alleged Iran was making strides toward mastering critical elements for atomic weapons.

Iran claims its nuclear program only seeks reactors for power and research. But the current breakdown in relations with the West could embolden hard-liners who want a tougher stance against the International Atomic Energy Agency, which they accuse of being manipulated by the U.S. and allies.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Iran will certainly "retaliate" for the British expulsions.

The British Foreign Office said "all diplomatic staff of the Iranian Embassy in London took off from Heathrow airport" on Friday afternoon. They were to be welcomed back by a group of Iranians early Saturday at the Tehran airport, Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency reported.

The offer for foreign media to cover their arrival stands in sharp counterpoint to an order Thursday banning non-Iranian outlets from reporting on rallies in front of the now-vacant British diplomatic sites in the capital without specific permission.

Britain's ambassador to Iran, Dominick Chilcott ? now back in Britain ? offered new details about the attacks, saying the experience had been "frightening."

"We had no idea how it was going to end," he said, describing how the mob trashed rooms, damaged furniture, scrawled graffiti and tore up a portrait of Queen Victoria, as staff took shelter in a secure area of the embassy.

"It felt like very spiteful, mindless vandalism, but it wasn't quite mindless," Chilcott said. "They removed anything that was electronic ? mobile telephones, personal computers ? anything that might give information about who you were talking to or what you were doing."

He said seven staff at a separate residential compound that was also attacked were seized and "quite roughly handled" by the invaders.

Hard-liners in Iran have said the attack was an outpouring of the wrath of the Iranian people who believe Britain is a hostile country seeking to damage and weaken the Islamic Republic. Mohammad Mohammadian, a representative of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, praised the attackers, saying they had targeted the "epicenter of sedition."

Iranian government officials, meanwhile, said the storming of the embassy by angry protesters was unexpected and Iranian police intervened to protect the British diplomats and get the attackers out of the buildings.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has led the accusations that the rioters had a green light from Iranian authorities, including the powerful Revolutionary Guard. On Thursday, he said the attacks were "clearly premeditated" by high-ranking officials.

The demonstrations had been organized by hard-line groups on university campuses and Islamic seminaries and included denunciations of the latest sanctions on Iran over its nuclear efforts. Such major anti-Western rallies are rarely allowed to occur without official approval and often include state-backed forces including a paramilitary group known as the Basij, which is part of the vast security network controlled by the Revolutionary Guard.

Images broadcast around the world showed demonstrators tearing down Union Jack flags, brandishing a looted picture of Queen Elizabeth II and tossing out looted documents.

The deepening tensions with Britain and others may also trigger further rifts within Iran.

For months, Iran's ruling system has ordered arrests and intimidation against political allies of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has sharply fallen from favor after challenging decisions by the head of the theocracy, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ahmadinejad has remained silent since the attacks, but his supporters have raised questions about whether Iran's interests are served by a diplomatic battle with the West.

China economy slowing despite policy easing (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's economic growth will probably slow to 8 percent in 2012 and further to 7 percent in 2013 even though the government has started to relax policy, a prominent Chinese government economist said on Thursday.

Wang Jian, a researcher with the National Development and Reform Commission, the top economic planning agency, said China's latest move to lower the reserve requirement ratio for its commercial banks signaled only modest policy easing.

"Even though economic growth is slowing, the pace of the slowdown is still gentle. So I reckon there won't be any dramatic policy shift for now since we cannot easily change interest rates," Wang told Reuters in an interview.

The economy grew 9.1 percent in the third quarter, slowing from 9.5 percent in the second quarter and 9.7 percent in the first. Growth in the fourth quarter is almost certain to dip below 9 percent.

Wang said he saw an increasing risk that economic growth would dip below 8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, which could prompt more aggressive policy measures, such as an interest rate cut.

"If GDP growth falls below 8 percent, we will see a sharp policy reversal," he said.

Analysts typically view growth of 7 to 8 percent in China as the bare minimum needed to generate jobs to absorb the urban influx of rural workers and preserve social stability.

China's central bank said on Wednesday it was cutting banks' reserve ratios for the first time in nearly three years to ease credit strains and shore up the slowing economy.

Most economists believe the cut marked the start of a policy easing cycle, and that the central bank is likely to lower the reserve ratio further to unleash lending and support growth.

Chinese leaders are likely to maintain "prudent" monetary policy next year, but the underlying tone has become more pro-growth, Wang said, cautioning that inflation remains a concern.

"China has been walking a tightrope between fighting inflation and stabilizing growth," Wang said.

"Now inflation pressures are easing but have not disappeared. We won't put too much emphasis on fighting inflation but we cannot easily lower our guard," he said.

Wang predicted annual consumer inflation in 2012 would stay elevated near 5 percent due to persistent pressures from higher costs of agricultural products.

Annual inflation dipped to 5.5 percent in October from September's 6.1 percent, pulling back further from July's three-year peak.

With the global landscape darkening, strong investment growth will be the key economic driver next year given that there is limited room to boost domestic consumption, Wang said.

Daihatsu Pico concept commuter EV hands-on

Using LEDs to display messages on the back of a car? Looks like we have yet another contender with the same idea, except this time all four sides get an LED panel each. The idea behind Daihatsu's Pico concept EV is that it can interact with surrounding pedestrians and drivers using messages with matching colors. For instance, the LED belt can issue a red warning on the back if a car is following too closely; or when driving past pedestrians in close proximity (think rascal scooters but with front and back seats), the belt can turn green and indicate that the car's limited to a safe top speed of 3.7mph.

Other than that, the Pico's very much just a cute little EV with a driving range of up to 31 miles (with a full two-hour charge), plus a top speed of 31mph. We also dig the touchscreen console inside the car, but with just the two LED bars acting as doors, we sure hope it'll withstand a bit of rain. Video after the break.
