Massive Mobile Advertising Ecosystem - Business Insider

We are in the post-PC era, and soon billions of consumers will be carrying around Internet-connected mobile devices for up to 16 hours a day.?Mobile audiences have exploded as a result.

Mobile advertising should be a bonanza, similar to online advertising a decade ago. However, it has been a bit slow off the ground, and its growth trajectory is not clear cut.

In a recent report from?BI?Intelligence?on the mobile advertising ecosystem, we?explain the complexities and fractures, and examine the central and dynamic roles played by mobile ad networks, demand side platforms, mobile ad exchanges, real-time bidding, agencies, brands, and new companies hoping to upend the traditional banner ad.

Here's the dynamics surrounding the mobile advertising ecosystem:

  • Mobile advertising is relatively tiny:?U.S. mobile ad revenue was $1.2 billion last year, a tiny fraction of overall U.S. ad spend.?And most "mobile ads" were simply search and display ads viewed on mobile.??According to BI Intelligence estimates, mobile advertising is on track to hit $3.2 billion this year.?
  • Why??Mobile CPMS are low, and ads are oftentimes intrusive.?Ad spending has therefore not caught up with time spent on mobile.?These will remain significant challenges to mobile ads.
  • Also, the mobile ad ecosystem is very complex:?The mobile ad ecosystem is not as strictly delineated as the desktop ecosystem.?In mobile advertising, the rules of the road change with different combinations of device, wireless operator, and operating system.
  • And there are few shared protocols or standards: Mobile lacks the technical consensus that enables ad targeting, delivery, and measurement to work fairly seamlessly across the desktop world.?As the mobile ad industry matures it will likely become more streamlined and simple, but for now there are innumerable actors interacting with one another and attempting to find a niche.
  • The display ad category presents a dynamic and complicated future:?Google?dominated the paid search category, which accounted for?62 percent of mobile global ad spend last year. But, mobile ad networks, demand side platforms, mobile ad exchanges are all part of a dynamic ecosystem that is constantly evolving and trying to grow non-search mobile related advertising. New companies are also testing out and finding some success with mobile native ad formats.?

Obama Is Not the Reason There Aren't More High-Profile Black Politicians

The first black president hasn't recruited a wave of black politicians to follow him, and Politico's Jonathan Martin asks, essentially, whether President Obama has been a good enough black leader. Several black politicians respond that if Obama were that type of politician, he wouldn't have gotten elected in the first place. Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver says, "If he concentrated on trying to set up some kind of brigade of black aspiring politicians where he would mentor them and so forth, somebody would introduce impeachment legislation." Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says, "If he had been viewed as this champion of black people helping a cadre of young black people would that have been helpful to the bigger mission of having a black man not just elected but reelected to the presidency?" That is a polite way of noting that since Obama's election, the national conversation about race hasn't always been enlightening ? it has sometimes devolved into a?bad country song, or Glenn Beck saying the president hates white people, or the demands?for an investigation into the "Obamaphone," which is actually the Reaganphone.

RELATED: Was It Racist for Palin to Accuse Obama of 'Shuck and Jive'?

But while racism among some people, particularly in the South, plays a role, there are other barriers keeping black politicians from winning statewide. These things were not Obama's creation.

RELATED: The Real Story of Obama's Mom

Black voter turnout exceeded white voter turnout in 2012 for the first time ever, the Associated Press?reports today, based on a new analysis by the?Brookings Institution. Yet, Martin points out, "African-Americans are scarce and bordering on extinct in the U.S. Senate and governorships." Is this because Obama hasn't cultivated them? It's not that simple.?The American Prospect's Jamelle Bouie explained last year that while almost half of senators had first served in the House, no black representative had made the leap to the Senate. (The only one that has made the leap since, Tim Scott, was appointed to replace Jim DeMint after the senator quit for a $1 million job at the Heritage Foundation.) There are a couple reasons it's hard to make the jump: black representatives tend to come from big states, so they're less well known, and they tend to have very liberal voting records.?And black politicians tend to represent less affluent districts, meaning it harder for them to raise the huge amount of cash needed to win a Senate seat.

RELATED: Opinions On Race and Mormonism; Swing State Races Are Tight

Especially in the South, black Democrats and white Republicans have worked together to pack black people in a few congressional districts, meaning black representatives don't have much incentive to position themselves as moderate. (Georgia Rep. John Lewis and South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn told Politico that they "have concluded that district-packing is detrimental and stated that they'd be OK with representing more diverse districts.")?It's easier for black politicians to win statewide races when their congressional districts aren't overwhelmingly black. That was true of Obama when he was a state senator ? his district was redrawn in 2000 to include more wealthy white liberals. Bouie thinks Obama's loss in a 2000 House race in Chicago is what "freed him to build a multiracial constituency outside of Chicago's South Side."

Ariz. law forces cities to resell guns from buy-back programs

By David Schwartz

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Arizona Governor Jan Brewer on Monday signed legislation forcing municipalities to resell firearms from gun buy-back programs rather than destroy them, closing a loophole in the conservative state's laws.

Brewer, a Republican and staunch gun rights advocate, signed the bill preventing local governments from melting down the weapons obtained from these popular civic events. Before the new law, the state had allowed such firearms to be destroyed.

A spokesman for Brewer could not immediately be reached for comment late on Monday.

The bill had the support of the National Rifle Association and Arizona's Republican-controlled legislature. It cleared the state Senate earlier this month by an 18-12 vote. The state House approved the bill in March.

Supporters of the measure said municipalities were wasting taxpayers' money by not realizing the revenue from reselling turned-in weapons.

Opponents argued that it sent the wrong message and that the state needed to focus on the broader issue of gun control.

"This action by the governor is not only outrageous, but it is insensitive for us now to be putting these guns back on the streets," said state Senator Steve Gallardo, a Democrat and a leading opponent of the measure. "That's just plain wrong."

The law does not specify what penalties communities would face for violating its provisions.

Arizona became a battlefront in the national gun debate after a 2011 mass shooting outside a Tucson supermarket killed six people and left U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords gravely wounded.

Giffords, who has since left Congress, and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, have been pushing for tighter gun laws, especially in the wake of the December 2012 massacre at a Connecticut school in which a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 kids.

Budweiser?s Buddy Cup is Facebook-enabled

Facebook really is everywhere. Budweiser Brazil has announced the creation of a Facebook-enabled glass called the Buddy Cup.

Here's how it works: When two Buddy Cup-holding revelers toast each other by tapping their cups, they become Facebook friends through a chip that's embedded in the cups.

According to the promotional video, the cup is being tested in Brazil. A message in the clip's YouTube description says, "Soon you will also be able to make friends with just a toast in the Budzone of Budweiser major events. Stay tuned!"

So, what's the point? TheDrum.com reports that the "aim of the 'Buddy Cup' is to enhance brand activation and increase the interaction between Budweiser consumers attending the brand?s sponsored parties, concerts and festivals." Or, in noncorporate speak, to make money.

The online feedback is mixed so far. Tech blog BetaBeat writes, "In the olden times, clinking your beers together with a stranger was a sign of celebration?a mutual agreement that things were about to get weird. The fact that you?d never have to see them again or explain why you puked down the front of your shirt was a significant part of the appeal. Now, Budweiser is about to destroy that sacred experience with the introduction of the Buddy Cup."

But Gadget Review thinks the idea might have merit. The blog calls the Buddy Cup "an interesting idea, and one that could actually work in bars."

Alternative therapies may help lower blood pressure

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Alternative therapies such as aerobic exercise, resistance or strength training, and isometric hand grip exercises may help reduce your blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association.

In a new scientific statement published in its journal Hypertension, the association said alternative approaches could help people with blood pressure levels higher than 120/80 mm Hg and those who can't tolerate or don't respond well to standard medications.

However, alternative therapies shouldn't replace proven methods to lower blood pressure -- including physical activity, managing weight, not smoking or drinking excess alcohol, eating a low sodium balanced diet and taking medications when prescribed, the association said.

High blood pressure -- a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke -- affects more than 26 percent of the population worldwide and contributes to more than 13 percent of premature deaths.

An expert panel assessed three alternative remedy categories: exercise regimens; behavioral therapies such as meditation; and non-invasive procedures or devices including acupuncture and device-guided slow breathing. The panel did not review dietary and herbal treatments.

"There aren't many large well-designed studies lasting longer than a few weeks looking at alternative therapies, yet patients have a lot of questions about their value," said Robert D. Brook, M.D., Chair of the panel and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. "A common request from patients is, 'I don't like to take medications, what can I do to lower my blood pressure?' We wanted to provide some direction."

The alternative therapies rarely caused serious side effects and posed few health risks, but the analysis revealed some approaches were more beneficial than others and could be part of a comprehensive blood pressure-lowering treatment plan.

Brook and colleagues reviewed data published in 2006-11, including 1,000 studies on behavioral therapies, non-invasive procedures and devices, and three types of exercise (aerobic, resistance or weight training and isometric exercises, most commonly handgrip devices).

The studies also examined the effects of yoga, different styles of meditation, biofeedback methods, acupuncture, device-guided breathing, relaxation and stress reduction techniques.

The panel found:

  • All three types of exercise reduced blood pressure. Walking programs provided modest benefit while, somewhat surprisingly, four weeks of isometric hand grip exercises resulted in some of the most impressive improvements -- a 10 percent drop in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However, isometric exercise should be avoided among people with severely-uncontrolled high blood pressure (180/110 mm Hg or higher).
  • Behavioral therapies such as biofeedback and transcendental meditation may help lower blood pressure by a small amount. However, there's not sufficient data to support using other types of meditation.
  • Strong clinical evidence is also lacking to recommend yoga and other relaxation techniques for reducing blood pressure.
  • There isn't enough evidence to recommend acupuncture for lowering blood pressure, particularly given the complexities involved in employing this treatment. However, device-guided slow breathing did prove effective in lowering blood pressure when performed for 15-minute sessions three to four times a week.

"Most alternative approaches reduce systolic blood pressure by only 2-10 mm Hg; whereas standard doses of a blood pressure-lowering drug reduce systolic blood pressure by about 10-15 mm Hg," Brook said. "So, alternative approaches can be added to a treatment regimen after patients discuss their goals with their doctors."

'Confirmed fatalities' in Texas plant blast

By Regina Dennis

WEST, Texas (Reuters) - A deadly explosion and fire tore through a fertilizer plant in a small Texas town late on Wednesday, injuring more than 100 people, leveling dozens of homes and spewing toxic fumes that forced evacuations of half the community, authorities said.

They said an undetermined number of people had been killed, and that the death toll was expected to rise as search teams combed through the rubble of the West Fertilizer Co. plant and surrounding homes.

"We do have confirmed fatalities," Texas Public Safety Department spokesman D.L. Wilson told a news conference early on Thursday, about four hours after the explosion. "The number is not current yet. It could go up by the minute. We're in there searching the area right now and making sure that it's safe."

Officials said flames that continued to smolder inside the plant posed two threats - the possibility of setting off an explosion of a second fertilizer tank and the emission of hazardous fumes into the surrounding community.

Wilson said about half the town, an area encompassing eight to 10 blocks, had been evacuated and that "we might even have to evacuate on the other side of town" if winds shift overnight as expected.

The blast, apparently preceded by a fire at the plant, was reported at about 8 p.m. CDT (0100 GMT on Thursday) in West, a town of some 2,700 people about 80 miles south of Dallas and 20 miles north of Waco.

West Mayor Tommy Muska told Reuters that five or six volunteer firefighters who were among the first on the scene in the blast zone were unaccounted for.

CNN reported that at least two people had been killed, but that figure could not be independently confirmed.

"It's a lot of devastation. I've never seen anything like this," McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said. "It looks like a war zone with all the debris."

CAUSE A MYSTERY

Wilson said 50 to 75 homes were damaged by the explosion and a fire that followed, and that a nearby 50-unit apartment complex had been reduced to "a skeleton standing up." Muska put the number of destroyed homes at between 60 and 80.

Wilson said 133 people had been evacuated from a damaged nursing home, but it was not immediately clear how many residents of the facility were hurt.

He estimated that overall more than 100 people had been injured in the disaster.

There was no immediate official word on what sparked the explosion as emergency personnel assisted victims and doused the flames. U.S. Representative Bill Flores, whose district includes West, said he doubted any foul play was involved.

"I would not expect sabotage by any stretch of the imagination," he told CNN.

The air in town remained thick with smoke hours after the explosion, and the area around the blast site was littered with shards of wood, bricks and glass.

A Texas public safety dispatcher in Waco told Reuters the explosion followed a fire that erupted at the plant. Video footage showed a large fire burning at the scene before exploding into a fireball.

The blast produced ground motion equivalent to that of a magnitude 2.1 earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A Reuters reporter observed that a nearby middle school and several homes were severely burned. Dallas television station WFAA reported from helicopters that a roughly three-block area of West appeared to have been flattened.

BURNS, BROKEN BONES

Jason Shelton, 33, a father-of-two who lives less than a mile from the plant, said he heard fire trucks heading toward the facility five minutes before the explosion, and felt the concussion from the blast as he stood on his front porch.

"My windows started rattling and my kids screaming," Shelton told Reuters. "The screen door hit me in the forehead ... and all the screens blew off my windows."

Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco reported treating 66 patients, including children, for injuries including lacerations, burns and broken bones.

"We are seeing a lot of lacerations and orthopedic-type injuries ... things you would expect in an explosion," said David Argueta, vice president of hospital operations.

He said nine people suffering burns had been transferred to the Parkland Hospital in Dallas. A third hospital, Providence Health Center, reported receiving more than 30 patients from the disaster.

Governor Rick Perry issued a statement saying his office had "mobilized state resources to help local authorities" deal with the incident.

A White House official said the Obama administration was aware of the situation and monitoring local and state response through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The explosion came two days before the 20th anniversary of a fire in nearby Waco that engulfed a compound inhabited by David Koresh and his followers in the Branch Davidian sect, ending a siege by federal agents.

About 82 members of the sect and four federal agents died at Waco.

Why do You Need Good Quality Hifi Cables? - Artipot

There is no strict rule that you mandatorily need to buy an extra set of cables for your hifi system even if a set of cables already come inside the pack. However, buying an extra set of good quality cables is a wise idea to safeguard your dream system from electrical shocks. The cables that come along with the packing are good, but are not reliable for a long-term usage. They are good to use unless you purchase another set of trusted cables. Good quality hifi cables like Vertere cables come for a bit higher price, but are extremely safe and reliable to use for long years. Good quality cables definitely have a better influence on the sound quality and perform much better than any ordinary set of cables.
If you are still not convinced as to why would you need to buy an extra set of cables for your hifi system, the points elaborated below will help you understand how these cables can add significant value to your hifi system.
Safety
Spending a decent amount of money to get an extra set of cables might sound futile to most of you; however, this is essential if you love your hifi system and want to safeguard it from electric accidents. Good quality cables might come for a slightly higher price, but are extremely effective and reliable to safeguard your system against digital hiccups. Made of good quality materials, they help to protect your system when there are voltage fluctuations. Heavy electricity load and intermittent voltage fluctuations can damage the components of your hifi system. Therefore, interconnecting your hifi components with high quality cables is essential to ensure safety of your expensive system's components.
Better Quality
Good quality cables outperform ordinary cables in many aspects. High quality cables help transmit audio and video signals faithfully from one component to the other, thus delivering better quality sound and picture. Superior quality cables such as Vertere cables are made up of high quality products that help consistently maintain purity of transmission. The sound and picture quality that these cables produce are unmatchable with the ones that ordinary cables produce. The main purpose of buying a hifi system is the superlative quality it delivers, but you may have to compromise on the quality aspect if you are not complementing your hifi device with high quality cables.
Long Lasting
Good quality cables are made of high quality materials, and therefore, perform consistently good, no matter for how many long years you use them. These cables give you extremely satisfactory performance, consistently throughout the period of their use. Ordinary cables, on the other hand, get damaged after only a few years of their use. Vertere cables are one such fine performer when speaking of long term reliability.
Energy Efficient
Another stand out point of superior quality cables is that they help reduce power consumption. They act as energy saving power strip cords to reduce power consumption and increase energy efficiency. You can yourself feel the difference when you replace your ordinary cables with good quality cables like Vertere cables. It will deliver you high acoustic performance and will also let you considerably save on electricity bills.

BOSTON (AP) ? It dawned chilly, clear and blue, a parsimonious but perfect serving of New England springtime that ? because it came on the third Monday in April ? unquestionably called for a celebration.

The kind of morning just right for an 11:05 a.m. first pitch at Fenway Park. A day to remind your kids about the heroes of the American Revolution before heading out to stake a place on the curb and cheer on modern-day heroes of the Marathon. A day, Bostonians say, when their city realizes the best of itself.

And then, in 10 seconds of fury and smoke, the joy founded upon 117 years of sweat and aspiration was stolen away.

When a pair of bombs exploded Monday near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing at least three people and injuring more than 140, it left a scene of shattered glass and severed limbs that terrorized this city. Spectators who moments before had been cheering family and friends were knocked to the ground. Blood stained the pavement. With reports that two more bombs had been found unexploded, Bostonians and visitors hunkered down in fear.

But to appreciate the totality of what Boston surrendered in those moments of horror requires understanding just how much the city had to lose. Other cities have, no doubt, experienced far more horrific tragedies. But few have had their sense of security ripped away at a moment of such singular exultation, on a day that captures an essential part of this city's soul.

Monday in Boston was Patriots' Day, a holiday unique to New England that brings the region's rich history alive with reenactments recalling the battles of Lexington and Concord that marked the beginning of the American Revolution. For the city's children, it means a day off from school as they begin Spring Break. For 23,000 runners from around the world, the day caps months spent preparing to test body and spirit. It is a day when a city feels like a village, when strangers offer high-fives and free food to runners they'll never see again.

When it's over, runners wander through the streets, proudly wearing medals bearing the image of a unicorn. It is a symbol chosen because it represents the endless pursuit of perfection that lives mostly in myth ? except, that is, in those all-too-brief hours when Boston finds a bit of perfection in itself.

To see all that shattered is a hard feeling to put in to words, Bostonians say. But they tried nonetheless, because it felt right to do so.

For Meredith Saillant, the day's transformation was summed up in minutes, just after she finished running the 26.2-mile race, when a gathering with friends in a hotel room overlooking the finish line morphed from a party-in-the-making into a search for an escape route.

"I went into the shower laughing, so happy about what this day was all about ? and I came out and it was all over," said Saillant, who lives in the Boston suburb of Brookline. "It's just that sense of completely feeling just vulnerable, like something's been taken from us for no reason, for absolutely no reason, and it's just completely senseless."

In an old city that prides itself on its institutions, workers at Boston's hospitals seemed stunned by the shrapnel wounds and ruptured eardrums, as much because of the timing and the place they were inflicted as for their severity.

"This is something I've never seen in my 25 years here," said Alisdair Conn, chief of emergency services at Massachusetts General Hospital. "This amount of carnage in the civilian population, this is what we expect from war."

But the pain and despair was hardly limited to the emergency wards. Instead, it spread across the city, echoing off empty cobblestones.

By evening, SWAT team members with machine guns patrolled hospitals and stood outside hotels that were on lockdown. Most bars had closed early on a night when they're typically packed with post-race revelers.

"Be Safe and be (hash)BostonStrong," read one sign posted on the door of a darkened bar. "We urge everyone to please stay safe," said the sign posted at another.

At The Hill Tavern, across the street from Massachusetts General, people hunched over their beers and stared in shock at the television screens broadcasting news of the explosions. The mood was somber.

"You don't ever think something like this would happen so close to home, especially in Boston," said 23-year-old Kaitlyn Kloeblen. "You always think it's such a small, safe city."

Kloeben said she was avoiding the subway system and staying close to home for the night. "We don't want to go anywhere on the T or anything," she said. "We don't really feel safe."

The mood was equally wan in the promenades around historic Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market that would normally be thronged with post-Marathon partiers. Instead, nearly all the bars and restaurants were black, surrendering the streetscape to a few lonely hangers-on, a handful of police officers and a bronze statue of Red Auerbach, the legendary Celtics coach and general manager.

"Today is a very special day. I'm from Boston and I'm devastated," said Laura Gassett, who had brought friends from California, Utah and England to the Marathon before seeking solace at Durgin Park, one of just two bars open. "The terrorists are getting exactly what they wanted. They want to shut Boston down and they did. They cut us off right at the knees."

As Gassett and her friends went in search of a cab, a chain across the entrance to Dick's Last Resort ? a bar that posts its closing time as "til I freakin' say so!!" ? swung in the breeze and an outdoor loudspeaker broadcast the notes of "Always and Forever," across the emptiness that was not supposed to be.

"We were sitting in the bar and we saw bomb squads walking by with M-16s, checking trash barrels," said Gassett's partner, Candy Shoemaker. "It was like, 'Oh my God.'"

The disbelief seemed most obvious in the faces and the voices of runners. Many recalled how the day had started off so perfectly with cool, clear skies after last year's stifling heat.

"The runners on the course were happy," said Lucretia Ausse, who was running her first Boston Marathon, "and it was wild going through Wellesley. Just everybody - the spectators were off the hook."

Ausse had just crossed the finish line when she turned around and saw smoke pouring into the sky.

The finish line is usually a joyous place in Boston: the ultimate accomplishment in a marathon that's considered among the most difficult in the world to run, owing to its steep hills and competitive qualifying times. But this time, runners surged away from the finish line, anxious to pick up phones that would allow them to reassure their families. Except that none of the calls were going through.

There was anxiety and fear in Boston Common, a historic park just beyond the finish line where runners wrapped in foil blankets usually eagerly reunite with family members.

Instead, people wandered in and out in a confused daze, searching for family and friends who were unreachable. Sirens rang through the air. Helicopters thundered overhead. Runners collapsed on the ground, crying.

"It was mayhem. It was chaotic," said Mike Ferrari, 24, who lives in Boston. "Everyone just started running."

By nightfall, nearly all had departed and runner Tara Redmond, 42, hurried back to her hotel through eerily quiet streets. Tonight, after months of training to earn a Marathon medal, it felt wrong to wear hers as if there was something to celebrate. The only reason she had it on at all was that her mother had told her she deserved it. But Redmond was no longer sure.

She talked about all her fellow runners who'd joined Boston's once-a-year chase of excellence and who had been unable to claim their rightful prize. Together, with this city, they had started the day that held such promise, only to see it evaporate.

"It's such a sad day," Redmond said. Then, she glanced down, running her fingers over the medal ? the one depicting the Unicorn that symbolizes a city's search for rarely attainable perfection ? and her eyes filled with tears.

Sunday Spotlight: Mariano Rivera on the 'Responsibility' of Wearing No. 42

ABC News' Nicki Rossoll and Kari Rea report:

In this week's Sunday Spotlight, New York Yankees' closer Mariano Rivera reflects on the new film "42? and carrying on Jackie Robinson's legacy.

Rivera shares a special connection with the baseball legend who broke the color line - he's the last Major League Baseball player to wear Jackie Robinson's number, 42, which was retired by the league in 1997 for all new players.

And it's an honor that Rivera doesn't take lightly.

"It's not only a privilege or a satisfaction," Rivera said. "It's a responsibility."

Rivera announced his retirement in March, and with his exit, the No. 42 will only appear on baseball jerseys one day a year: Jackie Robinson Day.

On Monday, April 15 marks that special day in Major League Baseball where all players and on-field personnel wear the famous number to mark the anniversary date of the iconic player's first major league game.

But for the player who currently wears Robinson's number each and every game, the meaning behind No. 42 comes with a unique challenge.

"As a minority, [to] come from Panama and be the last one to wear number 42, I think it's a lot of pressure," Rivera said. "I accept the challenge."

Robinson was known for far more than his batting average and talent for stealing bases. He was the first African American to step up to bat in the major leagues, and is credited with breaking the color barrier in Major League baseball.

Today, Rivera thanks Robinson for paving the way for future minority players.

"It took a man like Mr. Jackie Robinson to break that barrier," Rivera said. "And thank God for him, because we enjoy these moments now because of him."

Jackie Robinson Day comes just after the release of the movie "42," which tells the story of Robinson's 10 year career with the Brooklyn Dodgers and how he made his mark on American history.

When asked about his own legacy, Rivera reflected on his career spent wearing the iconic No. 42.

"I have tried my best, and tried to keep the responsibility and do my job well," Rivera said.

Another New York Yankee shares a special connection with Jackie Robinson.

Yankees slugger Robinson Cano is named after the Brooklyn Dodgers legend and wears 24 (42 in reverse) in Robinson's honor.

"That is what my Dad told me, that he named me after Jackie and it's a blessing to have the name," Cano said.

"We all know, especially myself? we [are] here because of him," Cano added. "He opened the door for a lot of guys? you've got people from all over the world, guys play from all over the world."

Mubarak appears in Egyptian court for retrial

CAIRO (AP) ? The judge in Hosni Mubarak's retrial recused himself at the start of the first session on Saturday, citing a conflict of interest as the former Egyptian president appeared in court for the first time in 10 months grinning and waving to supporters.

The recusal threw the case deeper into disarray after an appeals court in January overturned a life sentence for Mubarak on a conviction for failing to prevent the killings of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ousted him.

The appeals court granted Mubarak a retrial after ruling that in the first trial, the prosecution's case lacked concrete evidence and failed to prove that protesters were killed by the police during the bloodiest days of the revolt. Some 900 people were killed in the 18-day uprising, most of them in the initial days.

Hoda Nasrallah, a rights lawyer representing 65 victims' families in the case, said there is no certainty that the prosecution will provide new evidence this time around to back up the charges.

The judge in the first trial criticized the prosecution for failing to provide evidence that police killed protesters. Protesters accused attorney general's office of shoddy work in collecting evidence. The attorney general at the time was a Mubarak-appointee who has since been replaced.

"The investigations took place in just one month, which is not enough time to review all the cases of killings across Egypt," Nasrallah said. "There are reports in the media that there will be new evidence submitted, but we're waiting to see if that is true."

Mubarak's first trial took place in a charged atmosphere that eclipsed the legal nuances of the case and led to what many saw as a politically motivated verdict aimed at calming a public outcry for justice after nearly 30 years of authoritarian rule.

Rumors had swirled several times in the past year that Mubarak was near death. However, the 84-year-old appeared upbeat in his first court appearance since his conviction in June 2012.

After being wheeled into the courtroom on a hospital gurney, he sat upright and grinned and waved to his supporters from inside the metal defendant's cage. His eyes were shaded behind brown-tinted glasses.

Mubarak's two sons, Alaa and Gamal, and his former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly were in the cage with him. They are currently imprisoned in separate cases. El-Adly, who was in charge of police during the uprising, was convicted of the same charges as Mubarak in his first trial and also sentenced to life in prison. His sentence was also overturned by the appeals court.

Mubarak was airlifted by a military helicopter to the court while his two sons and el-Adly were driven from Tora prison in the outskirts of Cairo.

The session lasted only a few minutes, ending after Judge Mostafa Hassan recused himself and referred the case to an appeals court to appoint another judge. He did not explain the conflict of interest behind the decision.

As he took the bench, some lawyers shouted, demanding that he remove himself from the case.

"Sit until you hear what the court's decision is," the judge responded.

Immediately after, he announced that the case would be sent to an appeals court. Some lawyers began chanting: "The people demand the execution of the ousted president!"

Local media reports had suggested Hassan might transfer the case to another judge. In October, he caused an uproar among political activists when he acquitted 25 Mubarak loyalists accused of organizing a deadly Camel Battle attack during the uprising. In the attack, assailants on horses and camels stormed downtown Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the protests.

If convicted again, the life sentences for Mubarak and el-Adly could be upheld or their sentences could be reduced. They could also be acquitted but is considered unlikely that they would draw a heavier sentence, such as the death penalty.

In addition to the charges related to deaths of protesters, Mubarak and his sons face corruption charges in the trial along with longtime business associate, Hussein Salem, who is currently on the run in Spain. Five police generals face the same charges as Mubarak with relation to the killing of protesters while a sixth is accused of gross negligence.

Mubarak's two sons and the six police generals are being retried after prosecutors filed an appeal against their acquittals.

The outcome of Mubarak's first trial prompted mass protests against the mixed verdict, which sentenced the former president to life in prison but did not offer anything close to full accountability for wrongdoing under his three decades in power.

The scene outside of the courthouse on Saturday reflected the change in the political atmosphere since the emotional outbursts that surrounded Mubarak's first trial in August 2011.

Hundreds flocked to the courtroom for his first trial and Egyptians and others in the region were glued to televisions in near-disbelief at seeing the former autocrat in a courtroom defendant's cage ? something that symbolized to many the people's triumph over dictatorship.

The retrial drew only a few dozen Mubarak opponents and supporters, who briefly threw stones at each other before police intervened.

More than two years after his ouster, Egyptians are reeling from myriad problems that include fuel shortages, growing unemployment and political polarization. The strains occasionally erupt into deadly street battles.

Mubarak has remained in custody since his conviction, spending some time in a prison hospital before being transferred to a military one on grounds that he needed better medical care. Prosecutors are requesting he be transferred back to a regular prison.

A high-level inquiry into the deaths of the nearly 900 protesters killed in the uprising, parts of which were released exclusively to The Associated Press last month, could weigh heavily in the retrial. It found that police were behind nearly all the killings, using snipers on rooftops overlooking Tahrir Square to shoot into huge crowds.

The inquiry determined that such deadly force could only have been authorized by security chief el-Adly with Mubarak's full knowledge. It determined that Mubarak watched the uprising against him unfold through a live TV feed at his palace, despite his later denial that he knew the extent of the protests and crackdown against them.

The judge in the retrial will have the discretion to decide whether to accept the fact-finding committee's report, which must first be sent to the prosecutor's office. The prosecution is tasked with further investigating its findings, and then deciding if it wants to include the report in its case file to the court.

The fact-finding commission was created by Mubarak's successor, Mohammed Morsi, who made a campaign promise to bring former officials to justice.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood supporters, though, have spoken out in support of so-called reconciliation talks with former officials, many of whom have been acquitted and released from prison in recent months.

Additionally, nearly 100 police officers have faced trial over the killing of protests during the revolt. All except two were acquitted.

Mubarak is the first Arab president to be tried and serve a prison sentence.

Downsizing - Early Retirement & Financial Independence Community

this is all starting to feel 'real'. My severance has been approved so I will be leaving megacorp in August. I'm excited, happy as can be, and a bit scared that I'm jumping too soon (only get 85 - 90% success in FIRECalc and FIDO RIP). I also have some fluff in my numbers so I'm hoping at the end of the day the worst thing that happens is that I have to live on SSI alone at the age of 85 or 90 .... my mom does it, and her life isn't awful, so I know it can be done.

We started cleaning out the spare bedroom closets in our current home today. OMG what a bunch of useless cr&p in those closets ! The master bedroom closets will be tougher and we'll start on those next week.

Current home has his and her offices which is going to be REALLY hard to give up, but the only way I can ER is to downsize to reduce property taxes, homeowners insurance and maintenance costs. Not having a private pool is going to hurt a bit also, but I won't miss the expense !

We will be moving to a 55+ community with dozens of clubs, three 9 hole golf courses, and two community pools. House size will go from 2800 sq ft to 1400, which is smaller than even our first house was !

Don't know why I'm posting this ... guess I just want to share with people who have gone through the same or will be going through this process. As we continue to clean up I'll update the thread. Hopefully someone finds it useful.

I can't believe I'm really doing this .... and I really hope I don't freak out as I start seeing my portfolio deplete rather than grow.

Gay marriage: Is Delaware next?

Delaware legislators proposed marriage equality legislation today, saying that they expect gay marriage to be legal in Delaware by June.

Gov. Jack Markell (D) of Delaware speaks in support of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in his state, April 11 in Wilmington, Del.

Delaware lawmakers introduced a bill Thursday that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state, with plans to have it signed into law by the end of June.

The legislation, which the governor has pledged to sign if passed by lawmakers, was filed a little more than a year after Delaware first began recognizing same-sex civil unions.

Critics of the civil union legislation warned at the time that it was simply a precursor to same-sex marriage in Delaware, which could soon join nine other states that have legalized gay marriage.

Gov. Jack Markell and Attorney General Beau Biden, both Democrats, joined lawmakers and other proponents Thursday to express their support of the bill.

"The department I run, the Department of Justice, is fully committed to correcting an injustice," Biden said.

The governor said the bill is about the most basic of individual rights, "the pursuit of happiness."

"It's time that we do the right thing," Markell said.

The bill has more than 20 co-sponsors, including one Republican, Rep. Michael Ramone of Newark. It will be heard by the House Administration Committee, chaired by Democratic Majority Leader Valerie Longhurst, on Wednesday.

"This bill is about the most fundamental of American freedoms, the freedom to marry the person you love," said Lisa Goodman, president of Equality Delaware, a gay rights organization that took the lead in crafting both the civil union and same-sex marriage bills.

As written, the new law would take effect July 1 if it passes the Democrat-controlled legislature.

No new civil unions would be performed after July 1, and couples in civil unions could convert their civil unions to marriages before July 2014 by applying for a marriage license to county clerks of the peace. On July 1, 2014, all remaining civil unions not subject to proceedings for dissolution, annulment or legal separation would automatically convert to marriages.

The legislation also states that same-sex unions established in other states will be treated the same as marriages under Delaware law.

In a nod to religious freedom, the bill states that no cleric or minister of a religious denomination would be required to perform or solemnize any marriage that does not conform to his or her religious beliefs.

Still, opposition to legalizing gay marriage in the state remains.

"Marriage serves a purpose and is based on the truth that men and women are complementary, the biological fact that reproduction depends on a man and a woman, and the reality that children need a mother and a father," Nicole Theis, executive director of the Delaware Family Policy Council, said in a statement. The conservative group is opposed to both same-sex civil unions and gay marriage.

Michael Jackson civil case jury pool grows to 104

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The pool of potential jurors to hear a case filed over Michael Jackson's death has grown to 104 people.

Attorneys and a judge concluded their second week of hardship screening on Friday.

In-person questioning of the panel will begin on Monday. It is expected to take multiple days for attorneys to select a panel of 12 jurors and several alternates to hear the case. Jurors must be available for 90 trial days.

The group of 103 has been given a 24-page questionnaire assessing their knowledge about the case.

The lawsuit was filed by Jackson's mother against concert giant AEG Live. The suit claims the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts failed to properly investigate the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the singer's death.

AEG has denied all wrongdoing.

Team of area grad students win national Urban Land Institute ...

A team of graduate students from three regional universities has won a prestigious national award for their plan to redevelop a section of downtown Minneapolis, edging out competition from Harvard and Yale Universities.

The five students from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Kansas and Kansas State University are this year?s winner of the Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition sponsored by the Washington-based Urban Land Institute. They will share in the $50,000 top prize.

The group?s plan for redeveloping the east side of downtown Minneapolis using its historic Armory building as an anchor was selected over proposals by teams from Harvard, Yale and a joint team from Ball State and Purdue Universities.

They emerged from 149 teams representing 70 universities across the United States and Canada, and is only the second time in recent years that a team from the Midwest has won the award.

Their ?Armory Green? plan used the 1930s era Minneapolis Armory to become an indoor market facing a park built above a garage. The project also included new retail, residential and office development. The site is two blocks from the planned downtown NFL stadium for the Minnesota Vikings.

Members of the team are Tyler Knott, a graduate student at the UMKC Lewis White Real Estate Center; Kevin Cunningham, Derek Hoetmer and Kylie Harper, all landscape planning students at Kansas State, and Lauren Leigh Brown, a KU architecture student.

?I was so pleased to see everything we taught in this program come to life through their proposal,? Walt Clements, the director of the Lewis White Center, said today.

Convincing People to Give Better Customer Service ? Business ...

Every leader at every level has a need to think about customer service. Whether you lead a team that is talking to paying customers every day, supporting those who do, or just interacting with internal customers, the need for customer service skills?and a customer orientation?is critical. When this subject comes up in training and coaching leaders, here is the most common question I get: ?How can I convince my people to give better customer service??

The answer may not be as hard as you think.

Your people have to genuinely like people.

If they don?t like people (or the people who are their customers), it is going to be much harder to influence them to deliver better customer service.

We all know that some folks are more people-focused than others (that doesn?t mean the other people are bad in any way, it just means that their first focus might not be people), so why don?t we put those people in positions to interact with customers?

Does that mean we should do a DISC or other personality assessment and make hiring decisions based on it in a black-and-white fashion 100% of the time? Does that mean we need to fire (or move) part of our existing team because they don?t meet these criteria?

No, but these questions are worth considering.

People who need to interact with other people, especially in stressful situations, will do better if their first preference is people vs. task.

So, there is hiring for Customer Service 101 in one sentence.

But what about your existing team, you ask?

I?ll give you three things (from a long list) that you can do to help your existing team.

Help them personalize the customer. When people see the customer as John or Gina or Rajesh, it is easier for them to work harder to provide great service. ?No one likes to be a number or be treated like one. And it is harder to do that to someone else when there is a name and a personality that they are talking to. How do you do this? Invest time and money for your people to meet and build at least some relationships with real customers.

Put people in the customer?s shoes. Beyond personalizing the customer, you can also internalize the experience. If your people could be customers of your product, help them experience it. If not, find ways to talk about how they feel as a customer of anything, and how that translates to the specific service they provide.

Describe what you mean by ?better customer service.? ?Do people really know what you expect from them in terms of customer service? Don?t say, ?they should? or ?they ought to??do they know? If not, it is time for real conversation and dialogue about what the picture looks like to you?so they can paint that picture. No one can meet expectations if they don?t know what they are?yours or the customers (which hopefully are aligned very closely in this case).

Customer service isn?t such a big leap when you begin to consider these things?and when you get these things right it will improve more than just customer service, but also customer relationships, and increase job satisfaction as well.

When It's Time To Buy Health Insurance: All You Need To Know ...

Health insurance can be a very broad and confusing topic. It is very easy to become swamped with all the information to learn on the subject. It is of utmost importance to get educated on insurance so you can make solid decisions for your own benefit. These tips will help you start buying health insurance.

When deciding on health insurance, you should pick the company that suits your individual needs. A PPO (preferred provider organization) has a network from which you choose from, and they let you use services out of network, but charge a fee. A POP (Point-of-Service) plan allows you to select a PCP; however, it has the ability to refer you to the outside of this network.

If you are a member of a group, it is possible to obtain less expensive health insurance. That is how most employers can offer inexpensive insurance. But, what happens if you are self-employed? Try joining an association or group, like the Freelancers Union. Among other things, you will be able to get affordable health insurance through these groups.

Ask your doctor if they give records to a mandated Medical Information Bureau. If so, you may enjoy yearly access to a complimentary copy of your information.

Vision insurance makess sense for you and your family, especially if anyone already has issues with vision, or eye problems run in your family. Coverage could include your physical exams as well as portions of the cost for spectacles and contacts. Vision insurance isn?t mandatory, so some people spend less cash by not having this kind of coverage.

If you are thinking about becoming a parent, look at your health insurance and make sure they will cover your expenses throughout the pregnancy. Some heath insurance policies do not cover some or all of pregnancy-related services.

Ask your physician if there is anything you can barter for service. She had her headaches cured, and he got a website!

As you can see, even though it is a complex area you can understand a lot about health insurance. Take the time to learn as much as you can before you invest in a policy. By using the advice from the above article, you can make smarter health insurance choices.

Oldest Dinosaur Embryo Fossils Discovered in China

Lufengosaurus, dinosaur egg, dinosaur embryo, dinosaur Bones from Lufengosaurus embryos (like this femur shown in cross-section) have yielded new information about dinosaur development. Image: A. LeBlanc

From Nature magazine

Palaeontologists working in China have unearthed the earliest collection of fossilized dinosaur embryos to date. The trove includes remains from many individuals at different developmental stages, providing a unique opportunity to investigate the embryonic development of a prehistoric species.

Robert Reisz, a palaeontologist at the University of Toronto in Mississauga, Canada, and his colleagues discovered the sauropodomorph fossils in a bone bed in Lufeng County that dates to the Early Jurassic period, 197 million to 190 million years ago. The site contained eggshells and more than 200 disarticulated bones ? the oldest known traces of budding dinosaurs, the researchers report online today in Nature.

?Most of our record of dinosaur embryos is concentrated in the Late Cretaceous period,? says David Evans, curator of vertebrate palaeontology at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. ?This [study] takes a detailed record of dinosaur embryology and pushes it back over 100 million years.?

But it is not just the age of the fossils that is notable, the researchers say. Spectroscopic analysis of bone-tissue samples from the Chinese nesting site revealed the oldest organic material ever seen in a terrestrial vertebrate. That was surprising because the fossilized femur bones were delicate and porous, which made them vulnerable to the corrosive effects of weathering and groundwater,?says Reisz.

?That suggests to us that other dinosaur fossils might have organic remains,? he says. ?We just haven?t looked at them in the right ways.?

Protein pointers
Reisz thinks that the complex proteins his team detected in that organic material are preserved collagen. Because collagen composition varies across species, further analyses could help researchers to compare the sauropodomorph fossils with those of other creatures. They include the mighty sauropods, close relatives ? and perhaps descendants ? of early sauropodomorphs that weighed in at about 100,000 kilograms each, making them the largest animals ever to roam Earth.

The researchers think that the Lufeng dinosaurs are sauropodomorphs because they are similar in many ways to intact embryonic skeletons of Massospondylus, a sauropodomorph that Reisz unearthed in South Africa in 2005. But their analysis does identify key differences between the two fossil finds. The Lufeng embryos were less developmentally advanced than the Massospondylus embryos, and they seem to be examples of a different genus, Lufengosaurus.

The embryos also yielded information that could help researchers to understand how these adult sauropodomorphs ? bipedal dinosaurs with long necks ? were able to grow to be 9 metres long, larger than any other terrestrial animal alive during their heyday. When the scientists compared two dozen Lufengosaurus femur bones of different sizes and in various stages of development, they found evidence of rapid, sustained embryonic growth and short incubation times.

Reisz says that the dinosaurs probably maintained this extreme rate of growth after hatching in an effort to evade predation by outgrowing their predators. ?This may be a model to explain gigantism in this group,? he says.

Hooters waitress refuses wig to hide surgery scar, loses job?

Following brain surgery, your main worry should not be whether you?ll get fired at work for refusing to wear a wig that scrapes your scar. But former Hooters waitress Sandra Lupo contends in a lawsuit that?s what happened when she declined to don a wig and her hours were reduced so much, she was forced to quit.

She filed a disability discrimination lawsuit in Missouri against Hooters of St. Peters, LLC and Hooters of America LLC and is seeking $25,000 for mental and emotional distress, plus punitive damages, attorney fees and other relief.

"Hooters of America believes the lawsuit is without foundation, denies the accusations and has filed a motion that the lawsuit be dismissed," the company said in a statement to NBC News. Hooters, in an April 5 response to the court, denies most of her statements and says ?its actions were taken for legitimate, nondiscriminatory business reasons.?

Hooters is a privately held chain of restaurants that bank on attractive waitresses wearing short shorts and cleavage-hugging shirts.

Lupo, who had been working at the Hooters of St. Peters, Mo., since 2005, was in her last six weeks of nursing school and was at her computer in June 2012 when she felt tingling and numbness on her left side. ?I was bleeding out in my brain,? she told NBCNews.com.

She spent a week in the hospital following her July 2 surgery and was visited by her Hooters manager, according to her suit filed on the Circuit Court of St. Charles County.

The lawsuit claims that her store manager told her ?she could return to work as soon as she was capable, and that, she could wear a ?chemo cap? or any other items of jewelry to distract from her lack of hair and the visibility of her cranial scar.?

Her hair had been cut to ?-inch for the surgery.

On July 16, Lupo?s doctors gave her the all-clear to return to work. Soon after, she met with her manager and the Hooters' regional manager, who said she would be required to wear a wig at work, according to Lupo?s lawsuit.

Hooters? April 5 filing does not address whether any of its employees told Lupo to wear a wig. It says that her manager ?informed her she would need a head covering.?

At the time of the meeting, Lupo protested that she was unable to afford a wig, which can cost from several hundred to several thousands of dollars, according to her claim.

When she did return to work July 21, wigless, she was told a wig was required. She then borrowed a wig but it ?caused extreme stress to her body because of the surgery and the healing wound,? according to the suit.

Hooters then reduced her hours ?to the point that Plaintiff could not earn an income, thereby forcing Plaintiff to quit,? according to the suit. ?It is and has been the routine custom, policy and practice of Defendants to reduce their employees? hours which forces them to voluntarily resign thereby making them ineligible for unemployment compensation.?

The Hooters filing specifically denies that allegation.

After Lupo said she could not wear the wig, Hooters stopped scheduling her for as many hours, she said.

?I actually had to beg for one shift a week,? Lupo said. Pre-surgery, she was working several days a week while finishing nursing school. She had also trained staff and worked promotions for the restaurant, but no alternate duties were offered to her.

?They refused to accommodate it,? she said.

Today she is recovered, graduated and working as a registered nurse.

?Justice,? she said, is the main goal of the lawsuit.
