Mental Health Month - City of Canterbury

The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Brian Robson, is encouraging local residents to attend the City's annual World Mental Health Day event at the Lakemba Uniting Church Hall on Thursday 11 October.

?

"Good mental health is vital to us all but sadly the incidence of mental illness in Australia is rising with one in five Australians experiencing a mental illness at some stage in their lives," Mayor Brian Robson said.

?

"Just like your physical health and fitness, your mental health is worth taking care of and improving.

?

"That's why Mental Health Month, and our Canterbury Connects Mental Health and Wellbeing Campaign, is a time to ask if we are feeling good about ourselves, if we have good relationships, and if we are engaging in activities that make us happy.

?

"The theme for Mental Health Month this year is 'Celebrate, Connect, Grow' and it is about celebrating the positive things in your life.

?

"A person's overall wellbeing encompasses not just their mental health, but also their physical health, social health, spiritual health and community health.

?

"As part of our Mental Health Week promotions, we are holding an event to encourage people to learn about fitness and mental health, and will also incorporate music and dance, so that people can relax and get to know one another.

?

"One of the best ways to deal with tough times is to draw on the support of our loved ones who can help us deal with what is happening.

?

"There is no shame in reaching out and tackling problems with the help of our friends or family. It is a great way to lessen our load and help us bounce back.

?

"We can build resilience with the support of relationships that create love and trust, provide role models, and offer encouragement, reassurance and hope when we need it.

?

"Come along and find out more about mental health and the importance of wellbeing and investing in your life," the Mayor said.

?

The World Mental Health Day event will be held at Lakemba Uniting Church Hall, The Boulevarde, Lakemba, Thursday 11 October 2012 from 10am - 2pm. For more details contact 9789 9594.
