PFT: 'Scary how good' Luck can be? |? Solid start

Casey Hampton, Alameda Ta'ammuAP

When Pittsburgh opened last season by taking a one-sided beatdown in Baltimore, Warren Sapp proclaimed that the Steelers were ?old, slow and it?s over.? Casey Hampton is, at age 35, the second-oldest Steeler. And at well over 300 pounds and coming off a torn ACL, he may be the slowest Steeler as well. But he insists that it?s not over.

?They?ve been saying that for how long?? Hampton said, via the Associated Press. ?They?ve been saying, ?You?re getting old,? and all that for years, and year in and year out we do our thing. So I don?t see it being any different this year.?

The Steelers aren?t as old as they used to be, with aging veterans James Farrior, Aaron Smith, Chris Hoke and Hines Ward retiring this offseason. Hampton said the Steelers have the right players in place to replace those longtime teammates.

?No question about it, when you?ve been around those guys 10-plus years, it?s definitely different,? Hampton said. ?But that?s part of it. You see guys come and go all the time. Those are definitely special guys, but I think those guys will fill in and do their best to make up for it.?

Hampton is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he says he?ll be ready to go when he needs to go.

?I don?t have no problem with being on it as long as I need to be,? Hampton said. ?I just want to get it right and be right when I?m out there. I don?t want to be out there hobbling messing around; I wanna be out there ready to go.?

And Hampton thinks the Steelers are ready to go to the postseason again, regardless of anyone saying he?s old and slow.

Twitter Bends Its Own Rules To Suspend The - Business Insider

After Guy Adams, a British journalist for?The Independent, tweeted a top NBC executive's email address, he found his account was suspended.

NBC and Twitter have partnered to cover the Olympics. And NBC has admitted it lodged the complaint with Twitter. So whatever the details, it looks like Twitter helped a major media partner silence a critic.

A Twitter support rep told Adams that the reason was he'd posted private information in violation of Twitter's rules, according to an email he shared with Deadspin, a sports blog.

(A Twitter spokeswoman cited the company's policy of not commenting on individual accounts for privacy reasons.)

Here's where things get messy. Twitter has long had rules against "publishing private and confidential information." It specifically forbids publishing "non-public, personal email addresses."

The executive in question, Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics, has had his email address published elsewhere, and it follows a standard format for NBC addresses. As a major executive at NBC, he's a public figure.

The address in question is also clearly a corporate email address, not a personal one?though at this point, we're getting into semantics.

So it's at best a gray area, where Twitter has a lot of discretion. And in the past, Twitter has loudly declared itself on the side of freedom of expression.

Adams said he'd written to Rachel Bremer, Twitter's European communications manager, to complain about his suspension.

We'd point out this one thing: According to the email from Twitter's support rep, all Adams had to do to get his account back was to agree that he'd follow Twitter's rules in the future. Which he told Bremer, the Twitter PR manager, that he'd be glad to do. So why is his account still offline?

New breast cancer screening implemented locally | Cancer Kick

??Action News

Capital Health in Hopewell, New Jersey is among the first in the country to put molecular breast imaging into daily practice.

Patients get a small injection of a radiotracer, then sit in a chair as the machine does the test.

The radiotracer goes straight to any tumors, and they show up as ?hot spots.?

Dr. Ann Moch says MBI is being used in addition to mammograms for women who run a high-risk of cancer, due to family history, genetics, or dense breast tissue.

?We?ve picked up lesions that haven?t been seen on a mammogram and we?ve found breast cancers in people who might not have detected it for quite some time,? said Dr. Moch.

Donna Reel was one of the first to get MBI screening at Capital Health.

Breast cancer runs in her family, and the cancer that took her mother?s life was not picked up by mammograms until very late.

Although she gets regular mammograms, Reel says MBI gave her extra assurance.

?It was very easythe doctor said I had textbook negative results so I was thrilled,? said Reel.

Dr. Moch says MBI testing takes about half an hour, and has a very low false-positive rate.

Pussy Riot becomes cause celebre in Putin's Russia

In February, five women walked silently into Moscow's Church of Christ the Saviour before clambering over railings, pulling on balaclavas and yelling out a protest song against Vladimir Putin.

The "punk prayer" by the all-woman group Pussy Riot lasted around a minute. But the echoes of their action are set to resound around Russia for years to come.

Three women arrested in March over the incident face up to seven years in a prison colony after being charged with hooliganism and have already spent four months awaiting trial behind bars.

Their case has been taken up by celebrities including pop star Sting and US rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

By acting with the utmost harshness, the authorities have turned the obscure group into a household name in a case that, according to some observers, risks becoming a publicity disaster for both Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church.

The women were arrested ahead of March's presidential polls, after which newly elected President Putin signed harsh new laws cracking down on opposition activity.

Opinion polls show growing support for the women, whose trial began on July 20 with the judge remanding them in custody until January 2013 and will continue next week with the legal arguments starting Monday.

Independent Levada pollsters this month found that 50 percent of Russians took a "negative" view of the trial, while 36 percent said they saw it positively.

That shows a change in public opinion since March when 46 percent said the women should be jailed.

In June, more than 100 mainstream Russian actors and cultural figures -- including several who officially backed Putin's presidential bid -- signed an open letter calling for their release.

Even one of the Buranovskiye Babushki, the elderly village women who sang for Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest, voiced her pity.

The case has prompted serious comparisons with that of Yukos oil company founder Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who was convicted of fraud after backing opposition to Putin and then re-sentenced for tax evasion.

In a stunning irony, the case is being heard in the same courthouse in Moscow.

"Three daring girls have provoked a grandiose court case comparable to the Yukos case", the politics editor of Vedomosti business daily wrote Thursday.

"Maybe it's even bigger than the Khodorkovsky case because it's obvious and it's straightforward," Pyotr Verzilov, the husband of one of the women on trial, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, told AFP.

The women's song called for Virgin Mary to "drive out Putin" and said that that the Patriarch should believe in God, not Putin.

The case raises uncomfortable questions over close ties between the Church and state.

Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill publicised the case with a mass prayer service outside the church, saying the women had desecrated holy relics, backed by video messages from celebrities.

Prosecutors in their indictment used religious language, accusing the women of "blasphemous acts" and inflicting "deep spiritual wounds on Orthodox Christians."

By pursuing the women, the authorities are returning a favour to a key ally, the Russian Orthodox Church, argued Alexei Makarkin, an analyst at the Centre of Political Technologies.

"The church has made it clear that it is completely on the side of the government and approves its anti-opposition position, saying protests are dangerous for society."

"The government feels indebted to those who helped it out."

Alexander Verkhovsky, the director of the Sova Center for Information and Analysis, said he believed the authorities made a test case out of the protest because offence to believers was "easier to explain to society, to its conservative part."

"In a sense the state made use of the Church," Verkhovsky said.

The Church can rally huge support. In November it took a relic from Greece on a tour of the country, attracting some three million worshippers and a five-kilometre (three-mile) queue in Moscow.

But Verkhovsky argued the Church was the ultimate loser.

"I think this plays against the Church. It is a major failure. It is simply a big mistake by Patriarch Kirill that he waded into this."

One outspoken and influential priest, Andrei Kurayev, told Rossiiskaya Gazeta state daily last month that "every day the group's members spend in detention works against the Church."

"This case has pushed educated and modern people away from the Church," said Makarkin.

But he argued that the trial did not reflect badly on Putin, since his supporters would "actively back harsh punishment or simply would not care."

Previously, Pussy Riot had sung a political protest song on tightly controlled Red Square, but the worst that happened to any of them was a fine.

LONDON (AP) ? It's go time for the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team. It's gold time.

The challenging exhibition schedule is over, marching in the opening ceremony is already a memory and the Olympic flame is burning brightly.

"We're ready," said coach Mike Krzyzewski.

They'd better be. Don't expect any opponents asking for photographs or autographs ? there are teams here that feel they can beat the Americans.

Although heavily favored to win the 12-nation tournament and capture gold just as they did four years ago in Beijing, the superstar-studded U.S. squad will face a talented field loaded with NBA players.

On Sunday, the U.S. opens pool play against France, an experienced squad led by San Antonio guard Tony Parker, who nearly missed the London Games because of a serious eye injury. Parker's ability to break down defenses and create in the open floor could pose an early problem for the Americans. And he's not the only headache for the U.S. as France's roster includes Ronny Turiaf, Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum, Kevin Seraphin and Nando de Colo ? all currently on NBA rosters.

"It's a big test for us," U.S. forward Carmelo Anthony said, lacing up his sneakers Saturday before practice at East London University. "We're going up against guys that we normally play on a night-to-night basis, and those countries have put them all together just like we have. And at the end of the day their main goal is to beat the United States.

"There's going to be some good battles."

France will only be the first. This isn't going to be some easy sightseeing stroll along the Thames for the American team before stepping onto the gold-medal stand. Spain, Argentina and Brazil are all talented enough to not only compete with the U.S., but potentially upset the world's No. 1 team.

That wasn't the case four years ago, when the U.S. steamrolled through the field, winning by at least 20 points in each of its first seven games before beating Spain 118-107 in the final. Krzyzewski, who guided the 2008 "Redeem Team" to gold, believes a potential road to gold could have some dangerous bumps.

"The overall 12 teams are more talented, more seasoned," he said. "Spain is just in the prime of their ? 28, 29 (years of age). Brazil is in that wheelhouse. I think Russia's really, really good. Obviously Argentina, everyone says they're older but their heart and talent has not gotten older, It's just gotten better.

"There's just more teams that feel that they have a chance to win the gold medal ? and medal ? than they did in '08."

Count the French among them. They finished second to Spain at last year's European Championships, and maintain they won't be intimidated by the U.S. team's collection of All-Stars, MVPs and household names. France's players have no intention of being posterized on a dunk by LeBron James or Kobe Bryant the way 7-foot-2 countryman Frederic Weis was famously embarrassed by a soaring Vince Carter in the 2000 Sydney Games.

France, 0-4 against the U.S. in Olympic competition, isn't frightened.

"For us there is no fear factor because we play against them all the time," said Parker, who will wear goggles to protect his surgically repaired left eye. "We know they are really, really good. But it's not going to be like the other teams where they don't see them and it's like, 'Oh, wow, I'm playing against Kobe and LeBron.'"

Bryant likened France's offense to the one Parker runs with the Spurs. Everything starts with the ball in Parker's hands, so the U.S. team's challenge will be to make him give it up.

"Slow him down and surround him," Bryant said. "Keep bodies in front of him at all times."

This U.S. team, comprised of five holdovers from the '08 squad, five from the 2010 world championship team and two newcomers, was loose and relaxed before Saturday's workout, a final tune-up before beginning the five-game preliminary round. Durant and Anthony playfully horsed around in the foul lane and Bryant smiled amusingly as photographers jockeyed for position like paparazzi trying to record his every move.

The mood will be decidedly different Sunday.

That's when everything change. That's when it matters.

"Everybody expects us to win gold," James said. "And that's what we're here for. Nothing else."

In recent days, Bryant, James and the other U.S. players have been careful not to get trapped into making comparisons to the Dream Team. Bryant recently caused a stir by saying the 2012 Olympians could beat the 1992 version that included Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Jordan called Bryant's comments "not one of the smarter things he ever could have done."

For now, the talk has quieted, the comparisons can wait. For this American team to be regarded among the others before them, there can only be one medal.

"The legacy will be determined if you win the gold or you don't," Krzyzewski said. "We're not talking about legacy everyday but it is. We're here to win a gold medal, and if we do less than that, then it will be a big loss for us."

Man hides cash in oven; cash gets baked by accident

    Australian currency (ThinkStock)

One man probably has learned a costly lesson about where he hides his cash.

The unidentified man from Sydney, Australia, sold his car last weekend. The $15,000 (approximately $15,652 in U.S. dollars) in proceeds was earmarked for his mortgage payment and other bills, according to Australian media. Opting not to squirrel away the loot in a mattress or bury it in his backyard, he decided to hide it his oven, which rarely gets used.

Bad move: Turns out, his wife decided to use the oven that day, preheating it for chicken nuggets and, yes, cooked the cash.

"It was everything I had," he told the news station. "I've got nothing to my name. That money was supposed to go towards my mortgage."

His wife was equally distraught and, reportedly, could not stop crying when telling her husband after she discovered what happened: The cash was baked into a colorful burnt mess.

The man reached out to his lender and the Reserve Bank of Australia for help.

The Reserve Bank advises people to take damaged currency to a bank. According to the Reserve Bank policy, "if several pieces of the same banknote are presented, the Reserve Bank's policy is for each piece to be worth a share of the value in proportion to its size... The combined value paid should be the face value of the original banknote."

Drought diminishes mighty Mississippi, puts heat on Congress

CHICAGO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The severe drought in the U.S. Midwest wreaked more havoc across the country on Thursday, forcing barges on the Mississippi River to lighten loads for fear of getting stuck and raising concerns about higher prices for food and gasoline.

Damage to crops in the most extensive drought in five decades and the pressure of the November elections sparked some action in the U.S. Congress to bring relief to farmers and make progress on a generous farm bill.

"When times are tough for farmers, they tend to be more active politically," Iowa Senator Charles Grassley said, urging fellow Republicans to act on the farm bill and avoid punishment at the polls.

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said on Thursday that Republican leaders were working with the Agriculture Committee "on an appropriate path forward."

"I do believe the House will address the livestock disaster program that unfortunately in the last farm bill was only authorized for four years," Boehner said.

Rain in the northern Midwest overnight improved corn and soybean crop prospects, and grain prices eased back a bit from near-record highs. But only light rains fell over parched areas of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois overnight, and more heat and dryness in the southern Midwest was forecast.

"There should be some improvement in areas like the Dakotas and Minnesota," Andy Karst, an agricultural meteorologist for World Weather Inc, said. "They have had some good rains of up to an inch or more and there should be more rain and more improvement over the next week."

At the Chicago Board of Trade, corn for September delivery closed 12-1/2 cents lower at $7.82 a bushel, down 5 percent from last week's record high. August soybeans closed 38-1/4 cents lower at $16.56, down 7 percent from last week's record high. September wheat closed 18-1/2 cents lower at $8.84-3/4, down 7 percent from last week's four-year high.

Crop scouts on Thursday reported corn yield prospects down about 27 percent from last year in central Iowa, the largest producing state. But dousings from recent night-time rains had helped soybeans. Early planting also may be helping soybeans survive the worst effects of the drought, scouts said.

A tour of Minnesota and North Dakota spring-planted wheat fields was also encouraging due to early plantings, scouts said. Yield potential was expected about 8 percent above last year.

"The only thing that can hurt this crop is a hail storm," said Ben Handcock, a Wheat Quality Council tour official.

    BARGES IN A BIND

The effects were literally being felt downstream.

One year after its waters swelled to historic proportions, the lower Mississippi River now sits so low that barge operators hauling some $180 billion in goods must lighten their loads for fear of getting stuck.

If water levels drop any lower, industry insiders say, prices could rise on the raw commodities commonly shipped by boat -- coal, grain, petroleum and steel, to name a few.

"The main thing that they're doing now is voluntarily reducing the size of their tows ... so they're having to take more trips to carry their normal volume of commodities," said Ann McCulloch, spokeswoman for American Waterways Operators, a national trade association representing tugboats, tow boats and barges.

"This will drive up transportation costs if it continues over a long period of time," she said.

Kirby Corp, the largest U.S. inland tank barge operator, said Thursday it is adding more capacity to its fleet that carries petrochemicals, gasoline and fertilizers.

    FOOD AND FIRES

In Washington, temperatures boiled on both sides of the aisle. A new five-year, $491 billion farm bill is stalled in the House on concerns there are not enough votes in the Republican-controlled chamber to pass a bill.

"We're seeing all across the country dried-up, parched land," said Senate Agriculture Committee chairwoman Debbie Stabenow. "This is a very serious issue for our farmers and ranchers, so we need a farm bill."

The farm bill has been attacked by Democrats for cutting too much from food stamps for the poor and by Republicans for doing too little to reform farm subsidies.

There is little more than a week before Congress moves to a recess that lasts until September 10. Democrats have lambasted Republicans for lack of action ahead of the November elections.

"If they actually try to do disaster next week, it's just to inoculate members for the month of August," said Ferd Hoefner, a small-farm activist. "We want the real bill and we want it this year."

Scattered rains in the Midwest this week have come too late for many crops, government drought specialists said, and the worst drought conditions since 1956 worsened over the last week.

Almost 30 percent of the nine-state Midwest was suffering extreme drought as of July 24, nearly triple that of a week ago.

The United States is the world's largest exporter of corn, soybeans and wheat. Markets around the world are growing worried that local food costs will soar because imports will be expensive, food aid for countries from Asia to Egypt will not be available, and food riots could occur as in the past.

Drought and scorching temperatures in Eastern Europe from Poland to Romania also have burned up crops, causing alarm about stockpiles and soaring prices. Russian wheat harvests will also be cut by drought and Indian harvests will be cut by the poorest monsoon rains in four decades, officials said on Thursday.

The U.S. Agriculture Department said U.S. food prices are likely to rise as much as 3.5 percent this year and as much as 4 percent in 2013, with higher feed costs driving up meat and dairy products. By comparison, the overall U.S. inflation rate is estimated at 2 percent this year and 1.9 percent in 2013.

Wildfires in drought-hit areas were also a growing problem. Firefighters in three Nebraska counties battled expanding wildfires, and Ola, Arkansas, a town of 1,300 people, was evacuated because of an approaching fire.

Lawyers who say that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office disproportionately singled out Latinos in the patrols accused him of launching some sweeps based on emails and letters that don't allege crimes, but complain only that "dark-skinned people" are congregating in a given area or speaking Spanish. Arpaio has long denied racial profiling allegations. (AP Photo/The Arizona Republic, Nick Oza) MARICOPA COUNTY OUT; MAGS OUT; NO SALES

(AP) ? When Joe Arpaio, the tough-talking Arizona law enforcement official, found himself in the awkward position of having his own words used against him in a discrimination lawsuit, the usually brash sheriff was unusually quiet.

The Maricopa County sheriff, testifying in the lawsuit accusing his office of racially profiling Hispanics, spoke in a hush. He said he was suffering from the flu.

Quietly, and clearing his throat often, Arpaio sought to clarify his own public statements that are being used in a lawsuit to prove prejudiced thinking and claims of systematic racial profiling. If lawyers for a group of Latinos win, Arpaio's office would have to make policy changes, though he won't face any jail time or fines.

If the sheriff wins, then the U.S. government would have a harder time proving similar claims in a separate Justice Department lawsuit against him.

The case represents the first time the sheriff's office has been accused of systematic racial profiling. It will serve as a precursor to the federal government's civil rights lawsuit, which is much broader.

Arpaio has long denied racial profiling allegations. He said Tuesday: "We don't arrest people because of the color of their skin."

The plaintiffs, a group of Latinos, say they were discriminated against during sweeps to flush out criminals and illegal immigrants in Maricopa County, which includes the metropolitan Phoenix area. During such sweeps, sheriff's deputies flood an area of a city ? in some cases, heavily Latino areas ? over several days to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders.

The group accused Arpaio of launching some sweeps based on emails and letters from residents who complained that "dark-skinned people" were congregating in a given area or speaking Spanish. The group says deputies in the sweeps pulled over Hispanics without probable cause, making the stops only to inquire about the immigration status of the people in the vehicles.

The sheriff has said that people are stopped only if authorities have probable cause to believe they have committed crimes and that deputies later find many are illegal immigrants.

Arpaio's office maintained that illegal immigrants accounted for 57 percent of the 1,500 people arrested in the 20 sweeps conducted since January 2008, according to figures provided by the sheriff's department, which hasn't conducted any such patrols since October.

Arpaio was asked whether a white person was ever arrested on an immigration violation during the first two years of such sweeps. He replied: "I can't recall."

Lawyers for the group also asked him: Why did you call illegal immigrants "dirty?"

The sheriff said the statement was taken out of context. He added that if a person were to cross the U.S.-Mexico border on foot over four days in the desert, that person "could be dirty."

"That's the context on how I used that word," he said.

Lawyers brought up another statement, one that Arpaio made on a national TV news show. The sheriff had called a 2007 comparison between his department and the Ku Klux Klan "an honor."

Arpaio responded that he doesn't consider the comparison an honor, adding that he has no use for the KKK.

Attorneys also turned to Arpaio's practice of putting county jail inmates in pink underwear, recalling his statements to an anti-illegal immigration group in Houston in 2009.

He said his official reason ? "so I can win the lawsuits" ? was that the color made the underwear less likely to be smuggled out of jail and sold on the black market.

"And then I have my reasons," he went on. "And my reason is they hate pink. They do. They may like it in California, but they don't like it in Arizona."

He was asked whether he says one thing in court and does another when he leaves.

"This is in humor," Arpaio said. "I make sure we do things properly in case I get sued."

Letters in the sheriff's immigration file also took center stage during his more than five hours of testimony. Plaintiffs' lawyers say Arpaio endorsed calls for racial profiling by passing along ambiguous and racially charged complaints to aides who planned the sweeps and carried out at least three patrols after receiving the letters.

They point out that Arpaio wrote thank-you notes to some who sent complaints.

Arpaio's attorneys denied that the letters and emails prompted patrols with a discriminatory motive.

His lawyers called the complaints racially insensitive and said aides ? not Arpaio himself ? decided where to conduct the patrols. They also said there was nothing wrong with the thank-you notes.

"He sends thank-you letters because he is an elected official," Tim Casey, the lawyer leading Arpaio's defense, said during opening arguments.

One of the letters he marked for a thank-you was from August 2008, when a woman suggested that the sheriff investigate a Sun City restaurant. It read: "From the staff at the register to the staff back in the kitchen area, all I heard was Spanish ? except when they haltingly spoke to a customer."

Arpaio noted in the margins, "letter thank you for info will look into it" and that the complaint should be sent to aide Brian Sands, who selects locations for sweeps, with a notation saying "for our operation." The sheriff's office launched a sweep two weeks later in Sun City.

Arpaio said Tuesday about the particular letter that speaking Spanish is not a crime and that he sent the note to Sands for "whatever he wants to do with it."

Arpaio also said he generally passed along requests for immigration enforcement in a particular area to his subordinates, but didn't do the planning for the sweeps.

"I just send this info to my subordinates so they could ask for it. I don't agree with every letter I receive," Arpaio said.

"We should never racially profile," he said. "It's immoral, illegal."

Drought Devastates U.S. Maize and Soya Crops

    From Nature magazine

Scorching temperatures and scarce rainfall has left large swathes of the United States in drought, with the 'breadbasket states', such as Iowa and Indiana, among the worst affected. The extreme weather conditions have wreaked havoc with the nation?s crop production, particularly maize (corn) and soya beans. Given that the country is the world?s top exporter of maize and one of the largest growers of soya beans, Nature explains how the drought could have ramifications for global food supplies, and what science is doing to help.

How extreme are the weather conditions?
Average temperatures on the US mainland in June peaked at 21.8 ?C, which is 1.1 ?C above the twentieth-century average, according to the National Climatic Data Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Silver Spring, Maryland. The June temperatures meant that the first half of 2012 was one of the warmest on record, and contributed to the warmest 12-month period in the United States since records began in 1895. On average, just 5.8 centimetres of rain fell in June ? 1.6 cm less than normal, making June 2012 the tenth driest on record, says NOAA. As of 3 July, more than half of the 48 contiguous US states had seen drought conditions, the largest percentage for the past 12 years, according to the US Drought Monitor service, run by the National Drought Mitigation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

And there is not much relief in sight. Dry weather is expected to continue into August in the southern to central Plains, across the Gulf coast and along the west coast, according to NOAA.

How much damage has been done?
On 18 July, nearly 1,300 counties across 29 states were declared ?natural disaster areas? by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a result of crop damage and loss caused by the drought and heat.

The USDA also cut its maize and soya bean estimates for the year on 11 July. The projected US maize yield is down 1.3 tonnes per hectare to 3.7 tonnes per hectare, a total of 45 million tonnes less than was predicted in June. Estimates of total US soya bean production are also down by 4.2 million tonnes to 83 million tonnes compared with June, contributing to a sizeable overall drop in predicted US oilseed production for 2012?13.

?Persistent and extreme June dryness across the central and Eastern corn belt and extreme late June and early July heat from the central Plains to the Ohio River Valley have substantially lowered yield prospects across most of the major growing regions,? says the July issue of the USDA's monthly report, World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates.

How have the crop losses affected prices?
The United States exports 53% of the world's maize and almost 43% of soya beans globally, so any change in the US supply of these crops will affect prices worldwide. The price of maize last week hit a record US$8.16 per bushel ($321 per tonne), and traders think that prices could rise above $9 per bushel by early August unless there is a significant change in the weather. That seems unlikely at the moment, says Maximo Torero, a food-market and trade analyst at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington DC. Prices of soya beans are also up by almost 30% since the beginning of June, and by almost 60% since the end of last year, he says.

How does this compare to the food crisis in 2008?
The prices of soya beans and maize have passed the 2008 peak. But wheat, rice and oil prices have not matched their 2008 highs, so that will help to stave off a similar crisis, says Torero. There is also no sign of the export restrictions that were put in place in 2008 that further exacerbated prices.

Who will feel the effects most?
The direct impact of the increase in maize and soya bean prices will be felt in net importing countries such as Mexico and China. The price hikes are unlikely to affect sub-Saharan Africa directly, because people there tend to consume locally produced maize and are not major consumers of soya beans, says Torero.

Furry Fans: Dogs and Cats Enjoying Television | Babble Pets

Meta 225x300 Furry Fans: Dogs and Cats Enjoying TelevisionI?m a television fan of the first order. I?m old school, though, I love to watch dramas rather than reality and movies rather than documentaries.

But it?s not just the two legged that love television, it turns out! Lots of four-legged pets are huge fans of the small screen, and they particularly seem to like shows that feature OTHER critters.

My dog Cannie Belle isn?t a television fan herself, although she does looks up when she hears another dog or a cat making noise on the screen. She does, however, go NUTS when I?m away from home and I skype my family to check in and say hello on video. Yeah, I might torture her a bit by calling her name when I?m on skype.

    What?

If you?re wondering if your pet will be a TV fan, try turning on a nature show or the dog show ? these seems to be the favorites.

Without further ado, please enjoy these pets watching the boob tube!
