Disc golf courses grow in popularity | Epou

John Roy has a special connection to the disc golf courses on the Peninsula.

He learned to play disc golf on the course at Newport New Park, but helped put in the New Quarter Park course in York County.

?It?s probably the finest course in southeastern Virginia,? Roy said of New Quarter.

With disc golf being so affordable, the popularity of both the courses has spiked. The Newport News course costs $2 for the day, while the course at New Quarter is $3. Discs can be rented at both parks for $1.

?We have people come from the United States ? especially with it being in the upper end of York County, which is close to Williamsburg,? said New Quarter Recreation Supervisor Molly Nealer. ?We have families come in that are in town for a family reunion and they found out about us through the Internet and they?ll bring half a family to come play disc golf.?

New Quarter has been open for five years, and Nealer said the front nine of New Quarter is a little easier than the back nine, which is more open for throwing. she said the only negative she ever hears about the course is that there?s bugs, which could also be said about most of planet.

On Father?s Day, the course saw 50 people come through, which was described by Nealer as a very good day in comparison to the usual traffic.

Roy, who is president of the Newport News Disc Golf Club, considers himself an unofficial greens keeper for the New Quarter and the Newport News courses. The club?s members frequently pick up trash on the courses.

Roy started playing disc golf because he lived across the street from Newport News Park. The course was installed in 1997. he said it?s a good basic course for learning all of the shots because, like golf played with balls, disc golf has different discs for different scenarios.

?I guess you can say it was born out on Hole 13 ? that?s where we dumped all of the baskets and that?s where we had to start putting them in,? Roy said.

The only complaint Roy has about the Newport News course is that as the discs become more advanced, they travel farther, so the course has become more like a putt-putt course, he said. to combat the short distance of the course, Roy and his other disc golf-loving friends tee off from the parking lot in efforts to make it more challenging for advanced players.
