Dyngus Day, the day after Easter, is meant as a time to blow off some steam following lent and talk a little politics. And this year Dyngus Day falls on a landmark date for South Bend's new Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Monday morning marks Mayor Buttigieg's 100th day in office, and He is already dealing with a major controversy ? the demotion of Darryl Boykins as South Bend's chief of police.
It's related to a federal investigation involving the taping of phone conversations at the police department, but beyond that few details are being made public.
On Saturday Buttigieg publicly addressed the issue during an "empowerment" event sponsored by Emmanuel Community Church. The mayor is still keeping relatively quiet. And despite a lot of criticism he is standing by his decision to have someone one else lead the South Bend Police Department.
?At end of day only my own conscience can have final say, and I did what I thought was right for the city,? he said.
Chuck Hurley is now the interim chief.
Buttigieg will deliver his first State of the City address Wednesday at the Kroc Center.
