Grab your red and white clothes and anything sporting a maple leaf for Sunday?s Canada Day celebration at Fraser River Heritage Park.

Organized by the Mission Heritage Association and the District of Mission, the party gets started early, with a pancake breakfast running from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. Partial proceeds from the meal benefit the Mission Optimist Club.

Crowd favourites such as the Matsqui Flyball and Agility Show (11 a.m., 1:15 and 3:30 p.m.) are returning, alongside the comedic antics, and exceptional skills, at the Mission Municipal Forest?s Loggers Show (11:30 a.m., 1:45 and 4 p.m.). Piper McKenzie is also putting on a comedy daredevil show (12:30, 2:45 and 5 p.m.)

Flag-raising ceremonies take place between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

A number of fun, family-friendly activities are happening throughout the day, including the Canadian Tire Kids Zone (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), that will feature pony rides, a bouncy train and castle, face painting, watermelon-eating contest, fish pond and more.

You can also take in gladiator jousting and a giant climbing wall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., go to the photo booth, run the RCMP obstacle challenge, and Mission fire department?s junior firefighter challenge, learn to juggle and play games.

Tim Hortons is sponsoring the? music and entertainment between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., including a Mission?s Got Talent show, the Wee Wigglers, Fiddlin? Frenzy, Bhangra Dancers and more.

Northern Lights is putting on the day?s final event, a fireworks show, that starts at 10 p.m.

Suu Kyi tells AFP willing to lead Myanmar if her party wins

Myanmar democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi said Thursday that she is prepared to lead her country one day, speaking with AFP in Paris at the end of a triumphant Europe tour.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in Europe for the first time in a quarter-century after enduring many years of house arrest, also spoke of her joy at the warm reception she received on her five-nation tour.

Asked whether she would be ready to lead the country also known as Burma one day, she said: "I think all party leaders have to prepare themselves for the possibility, if they truly believe in the democratic process.

"But it's not something that I think of all the time. In fact, I think one has to concentrate on present work, of course preparing for the future. The present has to be linked to one's hopes for the future."

Suu Kyi, 67, flies back on Friday to Myanmar, ending the tour during which she was cheered by large crowds of admirers and toasted by leaders in Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, Britain and France.

"So many people from different parts of the world seem to be aware of what we have been struggling for in Burma," she said. "I felt such a tremendous sense of solidarity with us. That has been a surprise."

Suu Kyi on Thursday had breakfast with French former president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, visited parliament and then held a debate with students at the Sorbonne university in Paris.

She admitted her two-week journey was strenuous and quipped: "It's very exhausting, and when people ask me about all the sacrifices that I've made, I'm always tempted to say the greatest sacrifice I have made is sleep."

Myanmar, once under iron-fisted military rule but now run by a quasi-civilian government, faces legislative elections in 2015, which Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy is set to contest.

But Suu Kyi stressed that the hard work needs to be done now.

"I think we can't wait until 2015 to see how things will emerge," she told AFP."It is now that is most important... the next three years will decide what shape 2015 will take."

As Western nations have eased or suspended sanctions, a business bonanza is under way in the resource-rich but impoverished nation.

Suu Kyi, the Oxford-educated daughter of the country's independence hero, stressed that "whether it's investment from China or the West, there should be codes of best practices to ensure that the investments are as beneficial for our people as profitable for the investors.

"We are very keen on businesses signing up to codes of good practices, especially with regards to financial transparency in the extractive industries, which tend to be the most controversial of all."

Suu Kyi's trip has been marred by communal strife in Myanmar's western Rakhine state, bordering Bangladesh. More than 80 people have died in clashes between Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya this month, the government said.

Suu Kyi said the key would be to strengthen the rule of law and citizenship laws, to ascertain which Rohingya are legal citizens and which are not.

"Some of them, I'm sure, are in accordance with the citizenship laws, entitled to the rights of citizens, but who these are we have to be able to find out," she said.

"Communal strife, lack of communal harmony, is usually rooted in cultural and religious differences which take time to sort out. But with rule of law, immediate problems could be minimised.

"The problem in the west is... that the border is very porous. And the immigration authorities are not always the least corrupt," she said.

"And so Bangladesh always says that people come over from Burma who belong to Burma, and Burma says that people are coming over from Bangladesh who do not belong here. So that's one problem.

"Another problem is the matter of citizenship. We need fair and strong citizenship laws which will stand up to international scrutiny."

On a lighter note, Suu Kyi -- wearing her trademark flowers in her hair -- had a complaint about the continent she has just toured.

"I have been given many, many flowers. Everywhere I go people give me flowers," she said.

"But there is one problem which I must let our friends in Europe know: the stems of European roses are very thick, and that makes it difficult for me to keep them in my hair. And I would appreciate if they would go in for smaller, daintier varieties."

Rebels storm Pro-Assad Syrian TV channel

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Gunmen stormed a pro-government Syrian TV channel headquarters on Wednesday, bombing buildings and shooting dead three employees, state media said, in one of the boldest attacks yet on a symbol of the authoritarian state.

President Bashar al-Assad declared late on Tuesday that his country was "at war". U.S. intelligence officials said the Syrian government was "holding fairly firm" and digging in for a long struggle against rebel forces who are getting stronger.

The dawn attack on Ikhbariya television's offices, 20 km (15 miles) south of the capital, as well as overnight fighting on the outskirts of Damascus showed the 16-month-old violence now rapidly encroaching on the city.

Ikhbariya resumed broadcasting shortly after the attack, which killed three journalists and four security guards, displaying bullet holes in its two-storey concrete building and pools of blood on the floor. One building was almost entirely destroyed.

"I heard a small explosion then a huge explosion and gunmen ran in. They ransacked the offices and entirely destroyed the newsroom," an employee who works at the offices in the town of Drousha told state media at the scene.

Syrian media are tightly regulated by the Ministry of Information. Although Ikhbariya is privately owned, opponents of Assad say it is a government mouthpiece.

After Tuesday's fighting unprecedented in its intensity around Damascus, violence appeared to ease off around the capital following the attack on the television complex. But rebel forces were clearly becoming stronger and more ambitious.

SYRIA "AT WAR"

During the pro-democracy revolt against the Assad family's four-decade rule, Ikhbariya has been pushing to counter what it says is a campaign of misinformation by Western and Arab satellite channels on the uprising that began in March 2011.

"We live in a real state of war from all angles," Assad told a cabinet he appointed on Tuesday, in a speech broadcast on state television. "When we are in a war, all policies and all sides and all sectors need to be directed at winning this war."

The declaration marks a change of rhetoric from Assad, who had long dismissed the uprising against him as the work of scattered militants in "terrorist gangs" funded from abroad.

The rambling speech - Assad also commented on subjects as far afield as the benefits of renewable energy - left little room for compromise. He denounced the West, which "takes and never gives, and this has been proven at every stage".

International mediator Kofi Annan said he had convened a ministerial-level meeting on Syria in Geneva on Saturday with the aim of seeking an end to the violence and agreeing on principles for a "Syrian-led political transition".

In a statement, the joint United Nations-Arab League envoy said he had invited foreign ministers from the five major powers - Britain, France, China, Russia and the United States - as well as Turkey, the European Union, Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar.

Despite the deterioration in Syria, so far there has been no sign of an appetite for full-scale Western intervention. However, last week's shooting down of a Turkish warplane by Syrian air defenses has focused attention on a volatile situation on Turkey's southeastern border with Syria.

"We will not refrain from teaching a lesson to anyone trying to test Turkey's greatness," Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday, referring to the incident near the countries' maritime borders.

Turkey's land border territories, hosting over 33,000 refugees and units of the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA), are quickly becoming a potential flashpoint. Tuesday's comments by Erdogan may if anything have added further uncertainty to the situation there.

Erdogan said on Tuesday that Syrian military elements approaching the border and posing a threat would be deemed a military target. He made no public clarification of new terms of engagement issued to troops.

"With Tayyip Erdogan's announcement, and if Syria complies with it, Turkey will have by itself declared a de facto 'buffer zone'," Radikal newspaper columnist Cengiz Candar wrote.

"And if Bashar al-Assad doesn't comply with this? That is, if he continues to send soldiers right up to the border? Turkey runs the risk of a military operation against him."

Turkey has in the past spoken of possible establishment of a 'humanitarian corridor' on Syrian soil - a venture that would inevitably require armed protection. But it has always insisted such a measure, if required by a rising tide of refugees or by evidence of massacres, would need international endorsement

United Nations investigators said on Wednesday Syrian government forces had committed human rights violations, including executions, across the country "on an alarming scale" during military operations in the past three months.

The report by the U.N. Human Rights Council, issued in Geneva, also listed killings and kidnappings by armed opposition groups trying to topple President Assad.

"The situation on the ground is dangerously and quickly deteriorating," the report said.

Syria's ambassador dismissed the accusations and threatened to end cooperation with international agencies.

The United Nations accuses Syrian forces of killing more than 10,000 people during the conflict, which began with a popular uprising and has built up into an armed insurgency.

A White House spokesman said of the attack on the pro-government television station: "We condemn all acts of violence, including those targeting pro-regime elements."

LONG FIGHT

Despite some military defections, mainly from low to mid-level ranks, Assad's inner circle remains cohesive and the war is still likely to be a drawn-out struggle, senior U.S. intelligence officials said, in an assessment dimming any U.S. hopes that Assad will fall soon.

"Our overall assessment ... would be that we are still seeing the military regime forces fairly cohesive, they've learned some lessons over the last year and a half about how to deal with this kind of insurgency," an official said.

The insurgency is also getting stronger, he said.

"Both sides seem to be girding for a long struggle. Our sense is that the regime still believes it can ultimately prevail or at least appears determined to try to prevail and the opposition at the same time seems to be preparing for a long fight."

The Internet of things: Smart houses, smart traffic, smart health

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Monday morning and you're in a hurry. On your way out, you check your pockets. Money. Mobile. Where are the car keys? A quick text message, and the keys let you know that they are under the papers on the dining table.

This everyday example is quite trivial, and doesn't really reflect the grand vision conjured up for experts by the term 'The Internet of Things' (IoT). However, it does give us some indication -- the Internet of Things involves the technology we use when the things around us are talking to each other.

The chips and sensors that identify these things also enable them to 'talk' to each other, or talk via the Internet and thus share and transfer information to the rest of the world. The fridge can tell you that a chicken fillet is on the verge if its expiry date. Your electric car can transfer power back to the grid so that it doesn't become overcharged, and if you have a chronic illness, you can be medically monitored and cared for via wireless sensor systems. We will soon have smart houses, smart traffic and smart health.

Technology optimists claim that IoT technology will be the vital missing link enabling us to meet the major challenges associated with climate change, energy efficiency, mobility and future health services. The new technology will also create new products, new services, new interfaces and new applications.

The visions

One of today's future researchers, Dave Evans of the American IT company Cisco, claims that there are about ten billion units connected to the web today, and that this will have increased by five times in 2020. 'We will be connecting devices to the Internet that we don't think about very much today. Our house, asthma inhaler, maybe our shoes -- perhaps even trees...' he tells the magazine Teknisk Ukeblad.

SINTEF's Chief Scientist, Ovidiu Vermesan, is working on both the Internet of Things and The Internet of Energy as part of several major EU projects. The first of these ambitions involves the electric car and what will be known as the smart house, in which products and services providing notifications, security, energy-saving, automation, telecommunication, computers and entertainment will be integrated into a single system with a shared user interface.

Vermesan thinks that we have to be visionary if we are to achieve these impossible targets. 'Obviously, not everything will be in place straight away. But we are developing the technology in Europe right now -- demonstrating, testing and developing products -- and by 2020 or 2030 we will be much nearer our target.'

'And how will all these products manage to talk to each other?' 'The 'language' will be based on a type of protocol, similar to the built-in formula that enables our mobile phones to talk using WiFi, ISA100, ZigBee or BlueTooth.'

'But will everything really be able to talk to everything else? Or will equipment in the energy sector only be able to talk to other energy-related equipment? Will devices in the health service be able to communicate internally, and so on? In other words, is IoT more of a concept than something that can become a reality?'

'IoT is a generic term for all of the devices and 'things' that can perform a service and that we want to be available on the Internet. Several of the things you mention can connect and share information with each other, but not all of them want to make the information available -- such as banks. Obviously, they want to make sure that only you can have access to your personal information via your mobile or computer.'

Communication in the health services

In the same way as we put ID chips on products, we can attach sensors to ourselves and allow them to communicate via the Web to other objects around us. The health service is currently testing sensors on elderly patients living at home. The sensors can monitor pulse and blood pressure. The measurements can be read by the patients themselves and communicated onward to a central location via their mobiles. This is a simple form of communication that does not involve the Web.

In the future however, technology optimists envisage a completely different flow of information, in which the IoT will be able to set up not only the system architecture but also the rules governing security and the flow of information.

PhD Inge Krogstad, Senior Adviser at Nordic CoE Health Care at the IT company SAS Institute, is working on a national network for the Internet of Things in Norway. He describes his scenario for the Internet of Things within the health service like this:

'In the morning the 'system' looks up that day's surgery schedule in the activity calendar and while it is checking the day's operations, it also checks traffic information on the patients' routes to the hospital. It optimises their routes, so that the last patient will be finished at 15:00, since it is Friday. If there is a lot of traffic and poor driving conditions, the system revises the rota, sends 'extra rota' text messages to another two employees, simultaneously adjusting the time the alarm clocks of that day's team will go off. It streams key data about the day's first two operations to the three employees' media devices (car radio, smart phone, PDA) as they travel to work, at the same time as it tells the patients that the schedule has been changed because an employee is sick, while it relocates all the resources in order to meet the revised schedule.'

Interpretation models needed

Frode Strisland at SINTEF is conducting research into small, portable wireless medical sensor systems that patients will be able to operate in their own homes. For example, many chronically ill patients will benefit greatly from being able to understand and follow up their own illness together with their doctor. Many other elderly and chronically ill patients are grateful for the sensor technology that makes life safer for them -- for example by sending an alarm if a patient has a fall.

He thinks that IoT is important, and will soon be offering many opportunities within the field of medical follow up. However, he emphasises that medical information is private and must not fall into the wrong hands. Nor will an IoT be of much use if it allows all the information in the world to flow around on the Web, without anyone developing good models that can explain and interpret that information.

'It would be like the Meteorological Institute only having a network of measuring stations, but no interpretation models that could analyse the situation and make prognoses,' he says. 'IoT will provide many opportunities for us to medically monitor chronic patients in the future, but it will be important for us to choose measuring methods that provide sound answers -- and work on developing interpretation models adapted to the patients as individuals, each with their own illnesses.

Most things involve energy

Ovidiu Vermesan can understand that the new technology is hard to grasp. He is coordinating the EU Internet of Energy (IoE) project and working with 40 European partners on how to make it easier for energy suppliers and consumers to interconnect with each others' equipment.

Major changes in the energy sector in recent years mean that the need for smart, flexible energy is increasing, and that energy production and storage facilities will have to become more coordinated. Current methods mean that our electricity is supplied by large, commercial energy companies from coal, gas and nuclear power stations.

So far, these centrally controlled systems have not needed to communicate much with the outside world. In the future, however, distributed energy sources provided by multiple suppliers will take over. These sources will come from renewable energy such as hydro, wind and solar.

So according to Vermesan, production will be dictated by access to resources, which will in turn depend on solar intensity, wind strength or water flow. For instance, energy companies will have access to a lot of wind energy at certain times, when users will be able to benefit by disconnecting from other energy sources and only using wind energy. Energy will be a fresh commodity.

The new power grid

In the future power grid, known as the Smart Grid, every facility and device will have its own IP address so that it can be monitored and controlled via the Internet.

As consumers we will be among the first proponents of the future grid, via the new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology that will be installed in our homes over the next few years. This will enable us not only to understand but also control our consumption better. For instance, we can see right now that electricity is actually so expensive that it will save us money to wait a while before switching on the washing machine. And perhaps we should also turn off the hot water boiler for a few hours?

?According to Vermesan, the new grid will also be a two-way system. If you have more energy than you can use, you can sell it to the grid. This means that small energy producers, urban districts with energy-plus houses that produce more electricity than they consume, and motorists with electric cars that are part of a cooperative scheme can feed energy to the grid and act as energy companies, alongside the likes of Hafslund and NorgesEnergi.

'We will be able to move energy across the grid in the same way as we now move data,' he says.

'Moving energy?' 'Yes.' Using the Internet, you will be able to control where energy is delivered by identifying yourself, your location and what type of energy you need -- all made possible via two-way communication and roaming, as with mobile phones.

Electric cars that communicate

Electric cars will be able to connect to the smart future grid. Each car will contain a unique identifying SIM/MIM card, like the card in your mobile.

'Charging points for electric cars currently only have one socket, which is used for charging. In the future, they will also have a communication socket that will transfer information. In this project are working on developing a smart charger -- so that when a car is plugged into the socket, it will be possible to see what type of car it is, what sort of battery it has, and how fast it should be charged -- for three hours, six hours or half an hour,' Vermesan tells us.

When electric cars charge using traditional outlets, or when several cars are charging at the same time, this can result in grid overloads. But when electric cars can communicate with the grid, energy can be distributed in a much smarter way, reducing the risk of overloads.

Vermesan claims that this can make the grid more stable, since fully-charged electric cars can supply a certain amount of energy back to the grid to cover short-term peak loads.

The Internet of Traffic

When vehicles and road infrastructure come online and communicate with each other, the range of opportunities will be enormous. When your car is connected to the Internet of Traffic, you will be able to receive information about everything that is happening around you. How many other cars are on the road? Which is the quickest route, taking traffic into account, and how fast should you drive if you want the next traffic light to be on green?

If there is a problem with the road surface, or if weather conditions have resulted in poor driving conditions, cars will automatically communicate this to each other and to the agency responsible for the road, so that the problem can be sorted out quickly.

The work of getting traffic onto the Internet is well under way, and a number of applications are in the development phase. These will be useful for car-to-car and car-to-kerb communication.

The WiseCar project -- which is about intelligent cars -- has involved a number of Norwegian companies who have come up with various new products: Norsk Navigasjon's 'Waste Management' product is offering the opportunity to administer and manage waste collection. Triona AS has developed Norway's first system of automatic speed adaptation, (Intelligent Speed Adaptation), and SINTEF has been testing out vehicle-to-vehicle communication services, in which long-distance lorry drivers can notify each other about incidents on the road via display screens on their dashboards. The system has been tested out on the Oslo-Trondheim route.

Air traffic will also undergo changes. Up to five old systems are now being replaced in order to prevent future chaos in European airspace. Air traffic across the whole of Europe will have to be reorganised if it is to meet the challenges of the future, and instead of pilots communicating verbally with air traffic controllers, the information will be digital, and stored in an 'Internet cloud', says researcher Jan Erik H?keg?rd of SINTEF.

What will all this require?

All of the scenarios and plans linked to the Internet of Things sound fascinating. However, it is bound to cross many people's minds that this inter-connection of large volumes of data from all these different fields will inevitably create problems and challenges. That is why it is also important to plan ahead, and put in place the processes necessary if we are to extract the information generated when computers and systems start talking to each other.

SINTEF ICT is working on setting up two-way communication between vehicles and infrastructure, and is looking at how a new charger can transfer energy from the grid to the vehicle, and from the vehicle back to the grid. They are working on standardising the design of the socket, developing communication between car and infrastructure, and on how users will be able to receive this information.

'If we are to access energy and data through the same channel, we not only need miniaturisation but also new semi-conductor technology,' says Ovidiu Vermesan. 'This will require an infrastructure with energy ports, i.e. connection points like those we use when we physically connect a computer to the network via a cable. We will have to have electrical charging points, Smart Grids and fast-charging stations. This infrastructure will have to be able to connect all the power electronics, integrated circuits, sensors, processors, algorithms and software.

'Charging points for fast charging, what does that mean?' 'We will need charging points that can charge an electric car in less than half an hour, which means a much higher power output than we have now. An entire house, with its electric wall heaters, cooker hob, washing machine and so on, is capable of using an average of about 10-25 kilowatts of power.

A fast charging point will have to supply 50-80 kilowatts. The solution could be to store and distribute energy from large battery banks, and two major firms in the UK and Germany are working on this type of pack. ABB and Siemens Infineon are among the companies putting this technology into practice.

Inge Krogstad of SAS Institute also brings up another challenge that is complicating the way forward for the Internet of Things -- the volume of textual information. In an area such as health, we find incredible amounts of unstructured data such as notes and reports. Studies show that as much as 80 per cent of data in the health sector could be unstructured, and that the volume is increasing by 60 per cent each year!

Data protection and security

When systems interact, the security of each system must be reliable. We will become more conscious about data protection. For example, who should have access to the information, and how do we ensure that it is secure, yet still available to the person who needs it?

Thomas Nortvedt of the Norwegian Consumer Council is the European representative on the 'Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue' forum. When Gemini phoned him, he was reading a resolution about IoT.

'We think that this technology is exciting,' he says. 'However, it is very clear that we will have to safeguard data protection as this technology develops. We have had Web 1.0, which was about entertainment, and Web 2.0, which had a social agenda. Now we are well into Web 3.0, which we can describe as a semantic and personal Internet. Most of what consumers do on the Internet is personal -- just like when I go jogging with my phone, where I have downloaded a program telling me about time, calorie consumption and speed, etc. All my jogging runs are stored on this service's website, but obviously they are only of interest to me. My telephone must be connected to the internet for me to use this service, but that also makes it open for other people.

`The same thing applies to the new electricity meters that will soon be installed in Norwegian homes,' Nortvedt tells us. Norwegians are in favour of the service, since we think that the environment and saving energy are important. Americans, on the other hand, are sceptical: 'Are the energy companies going to see inside my fridge?!' With a box on the wall, information will flow both ways, but exactly what data will go out?

'Norwegian engineers believe that there may be no need for data to go out, and I hope they're right,' says Nortvedt. He is more concerned that a company like Google now has 60 of its services in one big pool, and is thereby getting a completely different picture of its users than before. 'We must put some mechanisms in place that give users much more ownership of these data,' says Nortvedt. 'If the Internet of Things is to work properly, it is important that we also develop it as an 'Internet for People'. That means establishing principles such as user control and clear rules of responsibility.

Avoid wiretapping

One positive feature of the Internet of the future is that it could be useful in dramatic situations, such as after a natural disaster or during an armed conflict. Since it will be made up of a number of networks of computers sending information to each other, the Web could prove to be vital in areas where infrastructure has been destroyed. It will be possible to send sound, images and other information from the scene of an accident, without being connected to an official network. That could save valuable time and help save lives.

LONDON (AP) ? Commodities trader Glencore International and takeover target Xstrata said Wednesday they have agreed on revised terms for paying retention bonuses for Xstrata executives, an issue which had stirred some shareholder opposition to the deal.

But the merger continues to face difficulties on other fronts, with Qatar Holding, which owns 10 percent of Xstrata, seeking a higher bid price.

Xstrata announced that retention bonuses would start being paid only if cost synergies exceed the previous estimate of $50 million a year. Glencore said it accepted the amended terms.

When the deal was announced in February, two big fund managers ? Standard Life Investments and Schroder Investment Management ? also said Glencore's offer undervalued Xstrata.

Wednesday's revision of the terms for Xstrata executives comes barely two weeks ahead of shareholders' votes on the deal.

Glencore shares were down 1.8 percent at 297.4 pence following the announcement, while Xstrata's share price was up 0.9 percent at 793 pence.

Some shareholders had objected to the retention provisions in the deal, which would have handed out a total of 173 million pounds to 73 senior employees as an incentive to stay in their jobs. In particular, concerns have been raised over a three-year, $45 million deal for Xstrata's chief executive Mick Davis, who is in line to become chief executive of the merged company.

The Association of British Insurers, representing a range of investors, had spoken against the original retention provisions.

Under the revised terms, the retention bonuses will start being paid if cost synergies are over $50 million a year. The bonuses will be fully paid if an additional $300 million is achieved over the first two years.

Xstrata's chairman, Sir John Bond, said the revised terms were "a stretching performance measure which, if achieved, will exceed the cost of the retention awards and improve the ongoing cost competitiveness and value of the combined group."

Glencore, which has scheduled a general meeting of shareholders for July 11, already holds a 34 percent stake in the mining company. Xstrata shareholders are to vote on July 12.

But the deal's completion faces a new challenge in Xstrata shareholder Qatari Holding, which wants 3.25 new Glencore shares for each Xstrata share, significantly more than the 2.8 shares currently on offer.

Qatar Holding said the higher price "would provide a more appropriate distribution of benefits of the merger whilst properly recognizing the intrinsic stand-alone value of Xstrata."

Qatar Holding, like most Gulf sovereign investors, is not known for shareholder activism. But its decision to rapidly amass a stake in Xstrata in the past months suggested it wanted a bigger voice in the combined company, if not the merger process itself.

Many of its most prominent investments are in Europe. They include London's Harrods department store and stakes in Barclays PLC, Credit Suisse Group, Volkswagen AG, London Stock Exchange Group and French luxury conglomerate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

Qatar Holding has increasingly shown an interest in investing in natural resource businesses. Besides the Xstrata holding, it has been building stakes in European energy companies such as French oil company Total SA, and last year invested in gold miner European Goldfields.

Nintendo 3DS XL caught on video, gets groped abroad

Nintendo's new 3DS XL was just revealed last week, but we didn't have to wait long for the plus-sized handheld to get put through its paces. Puissance Nintendo got its game on with Nintendo's newest, and if Google's translation is to be believed, the added screen real-estate is, naturally, a welcome addition, and the panel is plenty bright with excellent viewing angles. Also, any negative effects from the bigger pixels present in the display -- it's the same resolution as its baby brother -- have apparently been ameliorated by an anti-aliasing filter of some sort. As for folks concerned about gripping the 3DS XL, fear not, as ergonomics are reportedly spot on, with an even weight distribution that feels no heavier than a standard 3DS. Still not ready to rush out and grab one this August? Head on past the break to see the XL in action, and pop on over to the source link to see if the full French spill will persuade you.

(AP) ? The McDonald's at the London Olympic Park is supersized ? but not, its critics say, super-healthy.

The fast-food giant, a top Olympics sponsor with exclusive rights to sell branded food products inside the venue, said Monday its two-story restaurant at the games will be its biggest and busiest in the world, seating 1,500 diners and serving up to 14,000 people a day.

But despite complaints by British doctors, the food choices at the Olympics are largely identical to McDonald's fare around the world ? Big Macs, milkshakes, fries and chicken nuggets.

The only addition to the menu is iced fruit smoothies, which haven't yet been introduced in other British McDonald's.

The Academy of Royal Medical Colleges recently said that having McDonald's sponsor the Olympics sends the wrong message ? not least in Britain, which is battling increasing obesity. The group also criticized London Olympic organizers for accepting sponsorships from Coca-Cola and brewer Heineken, the official drinks sellers at the games.

McDonald's says it is offering its menu mainstays of burgers and fries, alongside healthier options because people enjoy the familiarity. It also prints out calorie information per item on its menu boards.

"We do offer a breadth of menu," said Jill McDonald, chief executive at McDonald's UK. "You can see on the menu here we have grilled chicken wraps, we have salads, fruit smoothies as well as the more indulgent recipes that people know and love."

McDonald's will bring in 2,000 of its best staffers to run four outlets at the Olympics venue: the vast flagship, another restaurant for spectators, one in the Athletes' Village and a fourth in the Media Center.

All will be dismantled after the games end, and executives stressed the efforts to which designers have gone to ensure that the restaurants conform to Olympic organizers' sustainability ambitions.

Three-quarters of the furniture and fittings at the flagship are set to be reused in other McDonald's restaurants after the games, and special waste-sorting facilities will ensure that most garbage gets recycled, executives said. All the beef will come from British farms, and the chocolate used in muffins will be fair-trade.

McDonald's has been an official Olympics sponsor since 1976, and said it would be using its expertise to provide "high-quality British food" at the games.

Sony Xperia P review

Android Central

Can build quality and multimedia chops redeem a phone lacking the latest version of Android? Find out as we take a closer look at the Sony Xperia P.

The fact that we’re starting to see dual-core phones at entry-level price points is a testament to the tremendous pace at which smartphone technology is advancing. Last year this kind of multiprocessing horsepower was reserved for only the most expensive handsets, but as we cross over into the second half of 2012, we’re increasingly seeing these chips in mid-range and low-end phones too.

One such device is the Sony Xperia P. Sitting between the Xperia S and Xperia U in terms of specs and price, the Xperia P is the middle child in Sony’s Xperia NXT series.
