For those of you who haven?t heard me tout it before, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators is a professional organization of science communicators who specialize in visualizations. Every year they hold a conference in a different area of the country and every year they never cease to amaze me with their talent, innovation, generosity, and collective knowledge. This year?s conference will be held at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia and starts in three short weeks. For anyone with an interest in science communication or illustration, I can?t recommend the conference enough.
This year?s featured speakers will be of particular interest to the science communicator. Dr. Jodie Holt, a botanist and consultant to the movie Avatar, will be speaking about how science, art, and technology can raise the public?s awareness of the plant world we routinely ignore. Concept artist Terryl Whitlatch will discuss how she blends creativity and observation of the natural world to come up with imaginative but believable fantasy creatures. Oliver Uberti, a design editor for National Geographic and the imagination behind the Museum of Unnatural History, will discuss how he employs his sketchbook during idea generation in the quest for ?iconic images you?ll remember.? Finally, animator and creative Chuck Carter will talk about developing a personal style with the aim of getting people?s attention in the current climate of over-stimulation. Personally, I haven?t seen such an impressive lineup of keynote speakers in the 10 years I have been involved in the GNSI.
For those of you who can?t make it but will be in the Savannah region between June 30 and August 6th, the Annual Member?s Juried Exhibit is a must-see. This year?s show will consist of two portions: the main exhibit will run from June 30th ? July 21st at the Pei Ling Chan Gallery and Garden for the Arts. Then from July 7th ? August 6th, the Jepson Center, in the Telfair Museum will display a Small Works juried exhibit. Images from both exhibits will be available online shortly; we will post the link here, so stay tuned.
Lastly, the GNSI?s Annual Conference provides invaluable opportunities to take hands-on workshops from giants in the field for insanely low prices. Workshops and meetings are open to non-members and members alike, so don?t be shy. There is still time to register before the start date of July 8th!
