Finance Manager - HigherEdJobs

Position Description: The Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI) is seeking a well-qualified candidate with a proven track record of successful financial management to fill the position of Finance Manager. Reporting to the CFO/Administrative Director, the Finance Manager is responsible for supporting the budgeting, reporting, and financial activities of the CCTSI. The CCTSI has an annual operating budget of approximately 17 million dollars and is principally supported by an NIH-NCATS Clinical and Translational Science Award. The CCTSI has 14 units which report their financial operations through the Administrative Core under the direction of the CFO/Administrative Director. The Finance Manager will work closely with the CFO/Administrative Director and PI to lead the strategic financial planning and reporting for the Institute and ensure financial accountability. In addition, this position will collaborate closely with CTSI Core Directors and Managers, University Administration, University of Colorado Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado, and other members to ensure that the budget activity is meeting the Institution's goals and objectives.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Manage the current year budget, forecast budget vs. actual spending, reconcile all CCTSI monthly expenses to the general ledger, manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash handling and billing transactions, ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with the established University, regulatory and CCTSI policies.
  • Manage the development of the CCTSI annual budget, prepare and submit appropriate documentation through the Office of Grants and Contracts, manage the establishment of post-award speedtypes, distribute relevant salary and non-personnel expenses to appropriate individuals across the institution, establish subcontracts, monitor speedtype budgets, and assist in the year end close and reconciliation process.
  • Manage the monthly and fiscal year end close processes, produce monthly budget performance reports and analyze CCTSI financial performance, produce financial reports for senior management.
  • In consultation with the CFO, develop and implement institute wide internal controls. Investigate opportunities for continuous improvements of CCTSI monitoring structure.
  • Monitor and update the departmental financial procedures and processes and implement policies set out by the CCTSI and the University.
  • Provide functional direction and assistance to the institute's leadership and staff so that they have access to necessary financial data required to make the appropriate decisions for all budget needs.
  • Manage CCTSI time and effort reporting.
  • Prepare all necessary reports, schedules and charts for budget review meetings and presentations.
  • Assist the CFO with special projects.
Additional Posting Description: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Sound knowledge of accounting principles
  • Experience with Microsoft Access (preferably significant)
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound independent judgment
  • Ability to understand a variety of accounting and financial reports
  • Strong attention to detail

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of related finance and budgeting experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office especially Access
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Business or related field
  • Experience working in medical academic environment
  • Experience with University finance systems
  • Proficiency with accounting software programs preferably Quickbooks
  • Experience working with federal grants
